pc port soundtrack
I really wish there was an option for Soul Reaver 1 where you could have the pc port sound track.

Wasn't it just a broken version of the console soundtrack? You don't like the intended version?

I'm not 100% sure the sound track seems better quality on the so maybe it was intentional.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to replace the original intended interactive tracker soundtrack that had dozens upon dozens of tracks and variations with ten non-interactive recordings of the same tracks.

For what it's worth, I imagine someone will mod it in eventually if it's reasonable to do so. I prefer the dynamic soundtrack but I know a lot of people got very used to the PC one.

I am still curious about this topic because everyone keeps saying 'hah wasnt the pc music BAD and BROKEN?' but when i go on youtube to compare, the pc version has this orchestra sounding music with depth to it, while the console version sounds like someone played random midi piano notes over the original. wtf?

like im genuinely unsure if this is intended or if this is an audio bug or what is going on...

I have no idea what orchestra you're talking about since the PC version soundtrack was just recordings of the console versions' soundtrack with an exceprt from the original Ozar Midrashim thrown in.

this is what i mean:

remastered:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu16ivPbgUk&t=20m2s

original pc version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGnirVFrh74&t=26m2s

the remastered sounds like MIDI notes, really basic with no effects.
the original pc one has like actual depth and echo to it

The PC one was just a broken version of the PS1 that was indeed dynamic and far superior, I'm glad they kept the original version. IMO

It wasn't a recording of the actual console output, but rather a re-render using the midis from it but with better sounding samples and post-remastering, hence why people prefer it better, because the resulting sound is in fact noticeably higher quality despite the lack of looping, dynamic changes etc. I mean just the fact that PC music had reverb changes a lot.

vs

I mean I am perfectly fine with what we got. For me it still sounds better than on original PSX hardware and I appreciate the dynamic changes (though I'd prefer some fading instead of abrupt changes in soundtrack when switching between locations), but the difference in fidelity is obvious.

The PC Port Soundtrack just loops Ozar Midrashim over the missing majority of tracks. If you want that experience, Mute the in game music in the options menu, and find a longplay version of Ozar Midrashim on youtube. Same Experience.

To clarify for those whom may not be aware: "Ozar Midrashim" is not a Soul Reaver original piece. It is a song from the band "Information Society" (within the "Don't be Afraid album), which was licensed for the game to serve as the theme of Raziel, and basis for the game's musical styles.

The song's solo composer, Kurt Harland, was hired for soul reaver, courtesy of his friend whom brought "Don't be Afraid" over to the office, where he would get to work engineering and composing a dynamic and responsive soundtrack at the specifications of lead writer, Amy Hennig.

If i recall this hopefully correctly:
Due to some technical differences between the PS1 vs old pc's , the sound engine the ost was made for couldn't crossover, so a bare and sparser version of the ost had to be rushed together.
This resulting in a rushed "alternative score" that some find.. lacking, compared to the console release.

And thus the endless battle begun between people who preferred the dynamic music feature, and the others that liked the fidellity of pre-recorded pieces that include soud effects like dynamic compression and reverb.

But the remaster does a fair balance of both, as the midi playback is now post-processed in-game. Of course this will never be as polished as something done with a DAW, even from the same midi base, but it's a good compromise

I don't know if it's because I have the Pal version of Soul Reaver 1 on PS1 but that video sounds nothing like it. And I know it's not nostalgia because I played it last week and the music sounds exactly like the video above used for the PC version.

They could add it in in the next patch.
