I'm not 100% sure the sound track seems better quality on the so maybe it was intentional.
like im genuinely unsure if this is intended or if this is an audio bug or what is going on...
this is what i mean:
remastered:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu16ivPbgUk&t=20m2s
original pc version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGnirVFrh74&t=26m2s
the remastered sounds like MIDI notes, really basic with no effects.
the original pc one has like actual depth and echo to it
PC Underworld OST

vs
PSX Underworld OST
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6YZIX6ofWE
I mean I am perfectly fine with what we got. For me it still sounds better than on original PSX hardware and I appreciate the dynamic changes (though I'd prefer some fading instead of abrupt changes in soundtrack when switching between locations), but the difference in fidelity is obvious.
The song's solo composer, Kurt Harland, was hired for soul reaver, courtesy of his friend whom brought "Don't be Afraid" over to the office, where he would get to work engineering and composing a dynamic and responsive soundtrack at the specifications of lead writer, Amy Hennig.
If i recall this hopefully correctly:
Due to some technical differences between the PS1 vs old pc's , the sound engine the ost was made for couldn't crossover, so a bare and sparser version of the ost had to be rushed together.
This resulting in a rushed "alternative score" that some find.. lacking, compared to the console release.
But the remaster does a fair balance of both, as the midi playback is now post-processed in-game. Of course this will never be as polished as something done with a DAW, even from the same midi base, but it's a good compromise
I don't know if it's because I have the Pal version of Soul Reaver 1 on PS1 but that video sounds nothing like it. And I know it's not nostalgia because I played it last week and the music sounds exactly like the video above used for the PC version.
