But in shmups, I doubt you'll find a similar or better coop experience than this one... For the moment...
In fact, if this is really "coop obligation" that makes you involved and get fun, you should search into puzzle plateformers, like Trine (1,2, 3), Chariot, Forced, the excellent Monaco, Spelunky...
And online Terraria, Starbound or the famous Don't Starve Together (with soon the Giant DLC)
If you like more scenaristic path and studied background, Child of light is a pretty journey.
Also, for a good fast paced action, Broforce, Binding of Isaac Rebirth (soon Afterbirth), Capsized, Hammerwatch, all the Metal Slugs, Magicka, Nuclear Throne, Renegade ops, the underrated Risk of Rain, Orcs must die 2 or Sanctum 2 online...
There is also Battleblock Theatre which dates a few years back already but it is totally amazing when I played with a friend. It's a puzzle-platform game with the same kind of awesome graphics as Lovers, and it demands a lot of coop too. The puzzles and level-design are really smart and make the coop really meaniful.
There is also the famous SpeedRunners as a fun 4-players versus game.
There are other coop games that are quite different from Lovers, but as enjoyable: Project Zomboid, Dungeon of the Endless, Divinity: Original Sin...
I also tought about Castle Crashers for a pretty nice coop cartoonish beat'em all.
