In one way, it's great because there is that fast paced top-down shootemup action that was a hallmark of SDO gameplay. There is also a similar system of gaining enough credits to increase your ship's loadout, or purchasing new hulls.
Though, this is where the game starts to differ, neither better nor worse. The coolest thing in comparison to SDO, is the physics based gameplay. If you load up your ship with three thrusters on the port side and none on the other, you're spinning starboard circles.. Being able to customise loadouts, layouts, and defenses is a pretty neat gameplay factor.
I've played Gimbal on and off since it was just a little babby of a spacefighter. Unfortunately, there is a small playerbase, though since I started playing again today at late night, it seems as though steam might mitigate this factor a bit. I have a feeling that the game does seem to benefit more tank-ish ships, though this is where it gets complicated. you can switch to a different ship setup in the midst of battle. too many agile fighters flying into space debris at ludicrous speed? grab a turtle and defend your whatevers.
It also feels as if there is a bit lacking from the experience, at least in comparison to that holy grail of space shootemups. It took a lot of time to be able to climb the elite ranks of SDO. I was just barely on the cusp of attaining a Revenge before those EA bastards shut our beloved game down.. Attaining the Revenge was my life's goal for a good chunk of time during my childhood. There is nowhere near the amount of dedication required to attain parts, ships, or the fourth (and highest) rank in Gimbal. And of course, there is no loyalty to a team. (Go Redstar!)
but for some quick and dirty space battles? it's pretty decent. Over all, I'd say that it's worth the price. And again, the ability to modify the hell out of your ships is a pretty sweet deal. your fighters are your own creation, but damn what i'd give to be able to fly that Revenge.. /tear
Still missing that game, played it during AOL and EA days.
I came across this about a month ago and been checking in weekly. This seems the closest anyone has come to a remake of SDO.
