The game is a fairly open world uninstanced (no "levels", just a seamless world) scrolling game ala-Metroid that does require backtracking (i.e. - some doors can't be opened until you get their key later in the game, some of which lead to new required areas and others that hide secrets), and has hidden passages that require certain magics to open or pass through very similar to Megaman X. There are quite a few optional situations that you may or may not miss that will affect the late-game (i.e. - one optional "situation" disappears after a certain amount of playtime if you don't take care of it, which causes you to lose access to a town later, for example). You can permanently lose crew member(s) if you don't find them on time, and some are hidden quite well (Crew do a number of things, from leveling up your finishers to crafting weapons and helping you in battle). Most dungeons have 2 or more paths to the same area, both of which may hide 1 or 2 side paths or more that contain items or some other secret. The bosses you defeat give you their "power" similarly to Megaman X, though these things don't affect other bosses in terms of weakness I believe, but they give you special abilities such as double jump, attack boost, leech damage, healing, other buffs and so forth and their controls are very well implemented. Etc. etc.
Then there's the RPG elements, such as fetch quests, skill trees, optional situations as mentioned before, some decision making that affects later situations, good dialogue, etc.
Music is very very well done.
Combat is very smooth and freaking awesome once you get used to it and get your controls figured out. The only gripe I have is the way the Skill Cancel is handled, because jumping in general is a bit annoying (especially wall dashing vs grabbing ledges), and the fact that I can't turn around without sliding that direction a little which makes platforming unnecessarily difficult in some situations (like the Fire Temple) - almost like your guy has shoes made of ice or something.
The game is basically Megaman X meets Metroid meets Castlevania. One of the best scrollers I've ever played, and I grew up in the NES era and ate SNES alive (my favorite system still).
It is VERY clear you played this game for maybe 20 minutes, sucked at the combat because you didn't learn it, raged and came to the forums spitting completely false facts and other nonsense.
Here's a game more suited for you:

No thank you necessary. I just like to help.
this game is on desura.
and the ocntrols are fine. It just takes some time to get used to that's all. It's nice challengeing game that requires you to actually learn the controls and not just button mash.
AKA, quick casual sit down, which means no merits to judge.
There was no option to adjust resolution, it lookd pretty torn up even in fullscreen mode and, what bothered me the most, the control could not be remapped and they worked OUTSIDE of the game... I couldn't even alt+tab or ctrl+esc to force close the process, my keyboard went nuts...
How does it look in the full versions?
Done.
Oh right and the bosses aren't wimpy pushovers that you can just hack'n'slash your way through. You actually have to dodge and think how to best deal with them and exploit their weaknesses. And that's even the case on normal
We gotta cut the devs of this game some slack as well as this is their first real title I think. And for what it is I think it is pretty good.
And you can remap controls.
He says he "played it at a friend's house" which sounds like a euphemism for her pirated it to me.
At any rate, I own and play a lot of games and I can in good faith say this is not anywhere even close to the worst in fact it's one of my favorites and I really enjoyed it, in spite of the fact that I kind of suck at it.
And while it can be a bit linear, particularly early on, it does open of somewhat at points and you don't necessarily always have to just go to one particular place next. Even when you do, I don't mind it, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the game very much.
Speaking of which I like it art, a lot. I know it's a subjective thing but stating the art is terrible etc, well no it's not. Not to me and plenty of others. If it's not his thing that fine.
I'll be the first one to admit there's a of lot of crap on Steam (and I own a bunch of it. waaat waat waaat waaaaaaah) but in no way, no how would I put this game in that category. It is hard, particularly the bosses, but if I can get through it then pretty much anyone can if they take a little time and effort. If you try to button mash your way through the bosses though, it's not gonna happen. Not even on the easiest setting.
OMFG I clicked on that link of the recommending game. I laughed so hard. Thank you!
Check yourself, it's so buggy... http://www.gamershell.com/download_101769.shtml
To answer your question then, the options exist in the full game and the game looks pretty good. I have a 1600x900 monitor and they're about as crisp as I would have expected from a 2D scroller.
