Games like this?
Valdis Story is one of my favorite metroidvania style games with its multiple playable characters, fun combat and varied playstyles. Are there any other games similar to it out there?

Ys Origin is a solid JRPG with multiple characters, fast-paced combat, and challenging bosses. It isn't technically a metroidvania but meets all your other criteria.

Ys Origin is fun, I'm sad that the rest of the Ys games don't really retain that feel. It definitely has that almost arcade-style exploring-a-castle sort of feel though, the combo and build potential, and multiple playable characters.

It's not really similar to Valdis Story though is it? I recall trying at least some Ys game once upon a time and didn't really get into it.

Ys Origin is more similar in a lot of ways style wise. The game is a top down game overall, but while most of the Ys games play almost like Zelda, Ys: Origin is a bit of a different game and plays a lot more like a metroidvania - some platforming, returning to older areas to find new things with new abilities and skills, that kind of thing. It's also MUCH shorter than the average Ys game, and much more linear overall.

Also, while Mumodora does not have multiple characters, I feel that it stylistically matches VS the most (combo based gameplay, punishing bosses with learnable patterns, rewards for clearing bosses under special circumstances, heavy focus on avoiding damage overall rather than tanking or healing/negating it).

You won't find many metroidvanias with character select, which is why I went outside the genre for a recommendation. If it absolutely has to be a metroidvania then you should've said so in the OP.

Doesn't absolutely have to be Metroidvania!

Yeah, Ys: Origin has the character select option, with the characters having pretty vastly different playstyles and even slightly different stories and dialogue, similar to this game. =D It also has some nice newer age additions like fast travel points!

Hmm, maybe I'll have to give it a look. It looks completely different than the other Ys game I tried. In that game, the combat seemed to mostly consist of your characters bumping into the enemy to do damage..

Yeah, Origin is way more arcade-style, with fast paced action oriented being the name of the game and gigantic bosses with interesting weakpoints/battle patterns/etc. And while there is a (pretty great I think) story, it's mostly superfluous in the face of the dungeons themselves, which I actually enjoyed. I'm not as accustomed to the 3D-ish aspect of it so that took some adjusting, but after a bit it is really, really fun.
