Stats: Pure strength
Skill tree: Leftmost tree, then light magic on rightmost tree with what's left over
Weapon: Starting greatsword, attack path upgrade (Note: Do not upgrade past first tier if you want to get all weapons in one playthrough)
Accessories: Tunnel Vision
Armor: Goibniu Armor
Great spells: Light is great for Wyatt. Holy wisp is great defensively, grace of light is a huge damage boost if you buff up light. Shadow walk is a fantastic spell that breaks many of the bosses.
Soul affinity: Neutral
General tips: Heavy attacks are great on him, so is stealth. Enemies recover HP while in stealth (i.e. shadow walk) but popping out of stealth will do a ton of damage to make up for it. You are totally invincible during shadow walk to all projectiles.
Unarmed Reina is pretty good, you would probably want Agi, Int or a mix of both.
Skill trees would be all red if Agi or blue if Int (probably a mix of both if the hybrid) after that is up how you find your playstyle turns out.
For Accessories you'd want one that lets you enchant unarmed though she starts with one but you may find one of the others to be better for you.
For Armor you want to look at the stats it gives you and then look at the effects after narrowing it down.
Fire is always a good spell but it is easier to use the opposite affinity of whatever you fight (however her upgraded via skill tree starting spells are pretty good until you get some level 3 spells.)
I'm not as good at soul affinity advice.
Soul affinity changes based on how much of affinity based stuff you have on... which is not only weapons and armor but includes currently equipped spells, accessories and even assists. fighting doesn't change it.
The effect also changes based on your stats if I remember right.
Another thing to note is that each weapon can drastically change how each character works. For example I find unarmed Wyatt to be really complex.
and lastly full luck, unarmed with fighter's bandages is a very broken build for most characters if you don't want to try as much. This is also good for those who'd like all weapons but aren't sure how they want to build for it.
When I started, I tried to specialize characters into doing 1 thing really well, and in most cases eventually came across a boss that wrecked me. Once I started to make more versatile characters I found the game became much easier.
Try different weapons, armor, relics and spells out frequently, and make use of Mesmer to try out different stat/skill builds for each character.
Stats: Pure agi
Skill tree: Leftmost tree, then honestly everything else seemed whatever, since I didn't really make use of magic
Weapon:Unarmed
Accessories: Fighter's Bandages, these are amazing, they double her attack
Armor: Monk Armor
Great spells: I used her damage boost spell I guess but it didn't seem that great.
Soul affinity: Neutral
General tips: Starts off with very limited range and terrible damage. After level 15 with a certain skill in the leftmost tree she improves exponentially and does like 3-4x as much damage as Wyatt. Note that agility increases focus length too so you can pretty much burn late bosses within one focus, it's pretty insane. Maybe try something other than unarmed to start off with her? Because it was pretty undewhelming until level 15 and the fighter's bandages. I probably shortchanged myself by not using her spells too, feel free to experiment.
- having balanced stats is kinda bad since a lots of bonuses are percent based, which means they're more efficients on builds focused on one or two stats. You can also make interesting and powerful builds with three stats, but you have to plan well and know the breakpoints : affinity bonuses comes with each slice of 5 points in a stat, which means you should always aim to have multiples of 5 in your stats. Often, S-ranking bosses with the laurels can grant you a solid stat base, even whitout investing in some of them.
- regarding skill trees, they're pretty straight-forward, check if there is one skill that synergize with the stat you want to invest in, and in general, the rest of this skill tree will be good. Though, on general, you want to focus on offensive skills rather than defensive, since Skill cancel allows you to avoid a lot of damage. There are some notable exceptions, though, like the Parry skill that can radically change your gameplay. In general, I pick either the right or the left tree, then complement it with the central tree, unless I'm picking two stats that synergize with both the right and left trees. For example, Str/Int Wyatt, that's a clear left and right trees character. Whereas full Str will probably be more left and middle trees.
- The great thing about VS weapons is that they can generally be build in any way you want. There are powerful synergies, though. For example, Strength innately makes your Heavy attacks stronger; so it benefits weapons that can make them. Strength Bow and Dagger is probably a bit "meh", but Str/Agi, that's another story...I guess what I'm trying to say, is that you only need a little investment in the stat that obviously synergize with a weapon to make it really shine. Like, if you're using Reina Great Hammer, consider getting at least to 15 Strength.
- accessories...they might appear underwhelming at first, but they can completely change your build. You experienced it with Fighter's Bandages (that you can get waaaaay sooner than level 15, Guardian Temple can be done around level 8-9, even sooner on very strong early builds), but even some that seem lame can be pretty powerful. Like the Weighted Bracers! 1 less combo seems lame? It is, but not so much once you've purchased all the combo upgrades from Daehman. And on an Agi Buile, ho my, that's some sweet Attack that will go right though the ennemies' armor thanks to your humongous Armor Ruin. On the other side, Tunnel Vision on Str builds, mmmmmmh, sweet sweet Armor Ruin...Also don't forget that accessories give stat points, which are useful to get to stat breakpoints (multiples of 5)
- no armor is bad, aside maybe the starting ones since they don't give stats, they all have their uses. Monk's robe on Unarmed builds is ridiculously good. Gladiator gives a LOT of stats. But Raiments for Agi builds, Armor for Str ones, and Vestmants for Int is a safe bet. The rest is choosing what affinity you want to use.
- For Wyatt and Vladyn, the Holy magic is bonkers when upgraded. Holy Wisp level 3 is awesome utility, Grace of Light is super strong. In general, Fire and Ice are solid and versatile options (full Int level 3 Dragon Punch combo is a sight to behold). Void and Lightning are more niche, but boy can they shine (Lightning versus Myrgato and True Anemone, Void versus Leilodin, mmmmmmh) But in general, you want to level at least one Light and one Dark school to level 3.
- each affinity is interesting, the worse one is probably Str Light affinity, gives Armor which is...meh, but there are some sick Light builds out there, and Myrgato is waaaaaay harder than Alagath.
A few info about Soul affinity : it does NOT reduce/increase the damage you take from attacks from the corresponding elements. Being in Dark affinity will not make you take less damage from fir for example. However, it does increase the damage you deal with the corresponding elements. If you have lots of Light affinity, Lightning attacks will deal more damage. Not by much, but it is noticeable. However, most of your magic's effectiveness will come from your Magic, Spell Ruin, and the enemy corresponding weakness. So you will deal a lot of Fire damage to Sirens for example, even in Light affinity.
Soul affinity comes only from your gear. That's it. The amount of angel/demon you kill is irrelevant. Note though that Spells equipped count, so you can change your affinity on the fly by cycling through your spells. That being said, I would recommend to try to always stay in the same affinity in order to build around your affinity bonuses. If you're used to the Agi movement speed bonus in Dark affinity, it could mess up your timings if you switch affinity mid-battle for example. Or if you go full Str Neutral affinity, maybe you don't need that much more Armor Ruin on the rest of your build, etc, etc...
Anyway, feel free to experiment! That's the beauty of VS : you have all the tools to beat, and even S rank all Bosses even with so-so synergies, but your choices do matter and will influence your gameplay. I highly recommend you try a Parry build, for example Wyatt Golden Shield. It's surprising how it crushes some enemies and bosses (Myrgato and Leilodin for example), and against the few bosses where it doesn't work so well, you can always pound them the regular way (Manowar for exemple)
I'll keep in mind about the 5 points. I bet you could get 2 stats up to 20 if you used the laurel. Str/agi neutral looks like it would be a beast.
Nice to know I've been using skills correctly. It's true, they're fairly straightforward.
I'd love to know your reasoning for why, say, bow/daggger is best with str/agi. Is it because you're using a mix of light and heavy attacks attacks? Does agi especially benefit light attacks in some way?
Thanks for the info about accessories! I wish I'd used tunnel vision on my str wyatt. I'm curious why weighted bracelets are especially good for agi? It seems like the straight-up damage increase would be useful for anyone.
Thanks again!
Weighted bracers are good for Agi, because the Agi stat doesn't give Attack, only Armor Ruin. To maximize your damage, you need somewhat of a balance between Attack and Armor Ruin. If you have a LOT of Attack, but no Armor Ruin, most of your damage will be absorbed by the ennemies Armor. On the contrary, lots of Armor Ruin but low Attack means your damage will right through the ennemies Armor, but don't deal as much damage as they could.
Plus, Weighted Bracers give fixed Attack, it's not a percent increase, so it benefits lower Attack more. Unlike, say, Goibniu Armor which is INCREDIBLE on pure Str builds.
Finally, a fast weapons have generally long combos, so -1 combo is not much detrimental in comparison to say, the Great Hammer that really needs all the hits of its combos to shine.
That's why Gladiator Vest is a pretty darn good armor. It gives 8 Strength AND 8 Agi, so it's great for Str, Agi, AND Str/Agi builds.
Also, straight Attack increase is not good for Int builds, these generally really need some kind of Spell Ruin to shine. But if you want to make incredibly powerful builds, try a full Int build with a weapon with the Magical Weapon property. Ho, funny fact, Grace of Light buffs your Damage, NOT only your Attack stat. Meaning it works for Magical Weapons. Full Int Reina Prayer Staff. Just try it. Slap some Divine buffs, and you'll be amazed at the damage output.
When I go back to play other characters again I'll experiment with those other weapons like the prayer staff and great hammer.
Stats: Pure agi
Skill tree: Skill cancel in middle tree, Leftmost tree, then whatever you like. I moved down middle to get regenerating skill cancels but you could also go right to buff up minions.
Weapon: The shotgun and sniper rifle are both great and lots of fun. I stuck with the shotgun which basically means you are almost in melee range.
Accessories: Weighted Bracelet
Armor: Any of the raiments, I used wandering
Great spells: The minions are all great as is Grace of Light, I also used fire damage buff.
Soul affinity: Who knows
General tips: Kind of a tough start but gets ridiculous pretty early. The shotgun's damage is totally unreasonable. Make sure to jump either before or after you shoot the shotgun to cancel the long animation. I was easily able to S every boss including the eyes and the guy in the halls of the fallen with this strategy.
Vladyn also has a demon arm. I assume that you could play him exactly like unarmed Reina.
Stats: Pure Int
Skill tree: Rightmost tree (Blight Dragon is a huge gamechanger and one of the best skills in the game), then whatever you want in the left to increase melee damage
Weapon: I stuck with her starting weapon for most of the game and then switched to her golden weapon at the end. This weapon prevents you from using magic but hits extremely fast, does a lot of damage, and gives huge stat boosts.
Accessories: Sorcerer's Regalia
Armor: Magister Vestments
Great spells: Almost all of her good spells are aerial. Ice is A++. Poison is quite nice throughout the game and you level it "for free". After that, you just need one dark class. I went with fire.
General tips: She does some tremendous damage to bosses in mid-late-game but loses effectiveness against the two eye bosses for some reason. Like I said before, once I had the golden weapon I found it doing better damage than casting magic. Despite the fact that she is a caster, she is really all about short range attacks, with her aerial ice attack being her most reliable short-to-mid distance damage dealer. If I played her again I would probably look for a pure melee stat build.
Welp, that's all the characters. I'm quite sad :( Next up is my main man, Vladyn, in god slayer.
BUT! Gilda is the Aerial Queen, who can reach almost unlimited heights due to her Cyclone attack and the fact that she hovers when regenerating her mana. This means she can gain access to some really nice upgrades waaaaaaaay before the other characters. For example, you can unlock the assist Axen BEFORE FACING AZUDOR! Same goes for Murderous Rainment, by the way, so that two very powerful upgrades super early.
I can not stress how powerful early access to Axen is, it's a middle CD Lightning Backstab attack, and at that stage of the game, it hits like a truck (100ish damage from memory), plus it can be used to juggle ennemies. In the same vein, you can get Shadoboxxer before Tagu for a short CD backslashing assist.
Now about the endgame, my experience is different than yours, Gilda really comes together the further you go into the game, because Mana becomes less and less of an issue, meaning you have to spend less and less time Chanting, and can spam spells all day. As you have discovered, Aerial Ice is super strong, and downright destroys Myrgato, whereas Aerial Void is just lazy busted, and Poison is super effective against annoying bosses like Magus or Manawar. For a full Int build, I generally stick with the starting weapon since it gives crazy amount of Spell Ruin, but her Golden Weapon is also sweet (but does it really prevents her to cast spells? I don't recall that, mmmmh, I'll have to check)
Edit : btw, you'll see, Godslayer is not that different, just a couple tricks here and there, but Bosses are mostly the same.
I beat God Slayer. That was BRUTAL in the beginning, especially the first boss... I had to get really tight with the mechanics to actually beat him and still get an A in time. But towards the end it was still incredibly easy, which was fun... I really like the feeling of going from struggling to dominating, kinda like Dark Souls.
Now that I've beaten it on God Slayer I guess I'm done with this game. I'm kinda sad to say goodbye to it because it's one of my favorite metroidvanias ever. I really wish there was more content or a sequel.
I got to 30, felt totally invincible, thought "I could keep doing this forever!" and then died immediatly. That was enough for me.
All four characters, "respec" to other pure builds(as many times as you'd like, lol, not literally) after lvl 15-20. By then you should have...pretty much everything upgraded to MAX. This is the ULTIMATE way to "farm", as you do it without "grinding"...just play.
...soooo...
