Is it possible to beat the Shanjian army on land?
The title says it all. Can you beat them one on one (or with an alliance) if you don't win the naval battle and don't have lumen abilities? Obviously running to Sedna doesn't count.

I believe it is impossible. You have to defeat their fleet.

It's not currently possible.

Ah. Thanks for the reply. I went on an achievement run, but to get the achievement I had to sacrifice naval and lumen... I was allied to Sedna, and tried to buff up land strategy, logistics, and swords in the last several weeks before the invasion, but it obviously wasn't enough even with almost maxed strategy.

I wish there were a way to do it. I'd like to see my soldiers beat them in a land battle. Ah well.

Because Nova commits to the naval battle, the land battle is automatically lost if you lose the naval fight.

So the game would need an option to forfeit the seas. Which wouldn't make much sense considering how Nova relies on their sea-trade. And since they don't know of Shanjian's motives, the possibility of a blockade pretty much makes ignoring them on sea impossible lore-wise.

One of the things I'm considering for a future content patch include a new option for dealing with Shanjia on land. However, as it's not written yet, I can't promise it will happen, and it may not be anything like what you're imagining.

I've had it pointed out that in reality it can be better to resist a sea invasion by attacking them when they're trying to land their ships - if they can't get to land, then all they can do is blockade you, and while that's annoying it would take a long time for that to really put Nova in a bad situation. However, BECAUSE that would take forever it's not necessarily a good option for the game.

No promises.

It would also be a reasonable outcome for a lost sea battle to still weaken the invading force enough that they can be beaten on land. They've just had part of their manpower and material sent to the bottom of the ocean while you still have almost all of yours because your ships weren't being used as transports.

A blockade might not resolve by the end of the game (making for a new epilogue card or two), but even forcing them to take that approach would give Nova time to ready a counterattack, especially if Elodie has managed to make some allies in the meantime and/or has a well-stocked treasury with which to hire/bribe/etc more help, so it might still end in a battle, just a little later and under different circumstances.

I had perfect military stats, but that didn't even help me win. Sort of unfair, because I thought I would be able to avoid losing if I overwhelmed them by military, but you can't avoid having to use lumen stats. I thought I could, but I lost.

You can beat them without using magic. You just need to prepare yourself for the war weeks beforehand.

As mentioned, you can win that fight without magic.

You can also have magic and still lose that fight.

You need to boost your country's war preparedness.
