Retro hack ftw.
It's actually easier. Have a current save game just before leveling. Maybe make some backup copies in the other save slots. Load the save, go into the inn. Level up. If you don't like the outcome don't allocate attribute points. Instead, windows key, right click the game in the taskbar, close window. Kills it without updating the save game. Rinse, repeat. You can do that a bunch of times to get a feel for what's even possible, make a mental note of the best roll you've seen yet. Once you've done that enough times to say "yeah that's enough" the next time you see a repeat of the best roll, keep it. You can also save the best roll along the way, copy it to another save slot, copy the "before" backup to your active slot, and keep trying to do better. It's really tedious, really frustrating, and really annoying, but without the ability to just hack the save file to give you something reasonable, it's either accept unreasonable outcomes or deal with the tedium. Kinda takes the fun out of it. I came looking and found this thread because I just class switched 3 fighters lvl 14 to samurai because progress had gotten way too slow. Found that after the class switch, HP increases on leveling up seem to be capped at 1. Lame. Like really lame.
No. There is a formula for calculating HP cap based on your class and current level. If you're over the cap, you will only gain 1 HP regardless. A couple of bonus roles on HP will put you over that cap. When you change class you keep all your HP but are back at level 1, so you're going to be over your HP cap for a while. Once you are close to your previous max level, you will have a chance to get more HP. Note that at higher levels, there is an increased chance to gain only 1 HP regardless of class. THis is working exactly the same as it did in the OG.
The idea was/is to make it a waste of time to save scum on HP rolls, since it will all average out over time. There is a point to save scumming on stat rolls, since you can go backwards. In any case, if you run all 10 floors as normal, you'll be plenty strong enough to take on the big boss (Werdna).
The save files are encrypted, I doubt anyone will succeed in cracking it. The devs clearly consider that cheating. The new game is already so much easier than the OG anyway.
