wtf i cant believe i cant beat this game due to save and quit and auto save file...wasted like 3 weeks of my life enjoying the game...but this crap is nonsense. i spent 6 hours tonight doing the same thing for leveling and then when i exit the gaming, my next playthrough doesnt exist and it auto brings me back to a previous file thats way behind.
That's advice for any game.
I do it after each play session. And I simply copy the save folder to another folder I set up specificly for all the games I am currently playing, and keep at least the last 5 copies. That's just routine for the last 40 years of gaming, because you never know when something will happen.
basically when you actually quit the game the top save file is the all in all done file...make sure you other 4 files for saving is up to date before you quit the game...i wasted 45 hours on my first Good aligned grp to learn this...and now im playing an evil grp and its all becoming super fun and challenging....hope there is more to come in the future with this potential series! Oh my start and finisher grp is fighter/sammy/thief(ninja lvl 15) priest/bishop/mage..the entire game...again maybe multiclassing early on would have been kinder to my hit points lol my lvl 14 mage has 83 hitpoints all and all my orginall toons had 27-29 attribute points rolls during character creations....so in the end having 18 vitality for 15 levels striaght didint add to much...for what could have been like over maybe 200hp if swapped classes during my mid game playthru...im drinking more wine the more i type sorry...the end
Alternately, never quit in the dungeon. Ever. Period. The game may let you autosave there, but the original APPLE code was NOT conducive to quitting in the dungeon. Like at all. Your game really "saves" upon entry into town only.
If you create a game in new save slot then rename that new game, then quit the game, the first save slot gets overwritten with the game you just renamed. I'm wondering if it is a syncing issue via steam. Nevertheless, I'm very disappointed this bug is still around when I've seen discussion of it back in 2023.
There is, however, a way to back up your saves, which should be done if you ever make a new game. It's discussed here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2518960/discussions/0/3884973963042207455/ but the tldr is to copy the savegames directory from here: appdata/local/murphy/saved/savegames to another location. You can then copy those files back over if needed. You can use %appdata% in the file explorer (Windows) to get to the AppData/Roaming directory, but you need to back out two levels and go into AppData/Local and its there in the /murphy/ directory you'll find your saves.
Edit: Make sure to turn off save game syncing in steam before doing this or steam will just put the original files from their cloud back on your hard drive.
Edit 2: After experimenting with this for a bit, it doesn't appear to be a syncing issue with steam, because with steam syncing off for this game, the renaming of another save file still over writes the first save file. Clearly a game related bug
