Lost my saved file
So just logged off the other night with over 30 hours played to have all my characters to about lvl 13 and farmed some pretty nice items from the fire dragon. Now i just logged onto the game today and my last time played file was gone and only had a saved game from a while ago when i was like lvl 7....so if there isnt a way to get my saved file back i guess ill end this game off with a complete unsatisfactory feeling...i was about kill the wizard too what a shame was looking forward to doing all the achievements too. I hope please there is a way for a dev to help me out finding my saved file from last night.

also the game saved pretty often when im afk doesnt make sense to me why that file isnt there a tall anymore....
even my steam achievements are up to date even tho the current saved file only has 2 maze items discovered versus my saved file i cant find that has all the items.
if you had cloud saves engaged you can try syncing with steam to get any files still in the cloud.
in steam it says cloud is up to date...shame i have no idea how to retrieve my latest saved file when the game auto saves all the time and ask's you to save and quit every time to leave the game...grr maybe long time from now ill muster the ambition to finish this game thru but there are bugs for sure.
did you try looking for saved games here?

i just played again for 2 hours to get back up to speed and i quit game and saved and exited and im still stuck on my old game file jesus....wtf
i even renamed my save file and doesnt exist keeps bringing back into my old previous game file which i cant delete...just rename for further advancement in the game just to have it not exist when i log back into the game!!
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pissed cause i should have beat the game and maybe would have had all the achievements done by now for inspecting monsters....
you may want to try verifying your files to make sure one is not corrupt and causing the problem. also you can use file explorer copy files to desktop before closing game.
i lost the file again because the quit game option after you did a clear quit and save
wtf i cant believe i cant beat this game due to save and quit and auto save file...wasted like 3 weeks of my life enjoying the game...but this crap is nonsense. i spent 6 hours tonight doing the same thing for leveling and then when i exit the gaming, my next playthrough doesnt exist and it auto brings me back to a previous file thats way behind.
i washed my hands of this game..sorry wish i had better posts about this game, about how i loved playing it... but due to the torture of playing where i left off due to auto save/not giving me my last save file to continue makes me never want to click on a wizardry icon again...and i beat wizardy gold and 7 and 8...

Always save in a new slot - don't override old saves, until you run out of empty slots. And always make a back-up copy of your saves folder at least once a week, or more.

That's advice for any game.

I do it after each play session. And I simply copy the save folder to another folder I set up specificly for all the games I am currently playing, and keep at least the last 5 copies. That's just routine for the last 40 years of gaming, because you never know when something will happen.
yea after a few days break i remade a evil group, this time all my toons are lvl 14 plus with a ninja lvl 15 i used thiefs dagger on...i hated that the game auto saved over my files from before...but this time around everytime i go to town or even have a player due for a level i save and copy save all 5 files to replicate the one i want...then i just save scum the hit points random per level..or even mage and cleric spells auto granted...reason is when i hit lvl 13 on my mage i didnt get tiltowait spell which erkked me good so thankfully with my 5 saved files copied i can make sure i have better outcomes for level perks. oh big spoiler if you manage to get a shurkien and thiefs dagger make sure you use them separatley..for example...i used my thiefs dagger first and i turned my evil thief into a ninja with no issuse since its 100% success...but then i used the shurkein right after and the dame thing failed and turned to dust when i invoked its powers....bottom line if you want the extra HP from shuriken equip...save the files after your turned into a ninja and use the shuriken after your saved your ninja file. Lastly im terribly sorry for the grammer i hope this helps at all. also i noticed when you level any toon their hit points tend to lean on 1 hit point. if it matters to you i save files just to play with random outcome..if your lucky you will get 20 plus hitpoints( i also tend to wait for 3 attribute points to gel with the 20 plus HP) instead of 1 point which seems to be the auto level HP at higher levels it seems, i never swithced classes with my toons since they were made..so only a few players have over 100 hitpoints mages never get more then 3 hit points per level and ive tried a lot..but it can still be rng for save scumming leveling for random hitpoints....i kinda feel like i should have pre determined my roles better and made fighters and mages early on and soaked the spells til like lvl 9ish and HP then do a 180 and swap them..just for the HP factor at gaining nice HP per level and then finalizing them into my final compostion...but heck thats what gaming is all about right?...anyways GL, i suck at typeing and i loved and hated this game not i love it again after learning how the stupid save files/auto save works
basically when you actually quit the game the top save file is the all in all done file...make sure you other 4 files for saving is up to date before you quit the game...i wasted 45 hours on my first Good aligned grp to learn this...and now im playing an evil grp and its all becoming super fun and challenging....hope there is more to come in the future with this potential series! Oh my start and finisher grp is fighter/sammy/thief(ninja lvl 15) priest/bishop/mage..the entire game...again maybe multiclassing early on would have been kinder to my hit points lol my lvl 14 mage has 83 hitpoints all and all my orginall toons had 27-29 attribute points rolls during character creations....so in the end having 18 vitality for 15 levels striaght didint add to much...for what could have been like over maybe 200hp if swapped classes during my mid game playthru...im drinking more wine the more i type sorry...the end

You may have left your game running on a different PC, one you may not have been using for a time. It will always be using that file because as soon as you close your local game, the game loaded on the other pc autosaves and then will upload and overwrite. I've had it happen in other games myself - such as my home pc left on for a few days was overwriting a game I was trying to make progress on with my laptop.

Alternately, never quit in the dungeon. Ever. Period. The game may let you autosave there, but the original APPLE code was NOT conducive to quitting in the dungeon. Like at all. Your game really "saves" upon entry into town only.

I can confirm that this is a bug that, after reviewing the forums, has been around quite a while. It just happened to me and I was able to reproduce it.

If you create a game in new save slot then rename that new game, then quit the game, the first save slot gets overwritten with the game you just renamed. I'm wondering if it is a syncing issue via steam. Nevertheless, I'm very disappointed this bug is still around when I've seen discussion of it back in 2023.

There is, however, a way to back up your saves, which should be done if you ever make a new game. It's discussed here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2518960/discussions/0/3884973963042207455/ but the tldr is to copy the savegames directory from here: appdata/local/murphy/saved/savegames to another location. You can then copy those files back over if needed. You can use %appdata% in the file explorer (Windows) to get to the AppData/Roaming directory, but you need to back out two levels and go into AppData/Local and its there in the /murphy/ directory you'll find your saves.

Edit: Make sure to turn off save game syncing in steam before doing this or steam will just put the original files from their cloud back on your hard drive.

Edit 2: After experimenting with this for a bit, it doesn't appear to be a syncing issue with steam, because with steam syncing off for this game, the renaming of another save file still over writes the first save file. Clearly a game related bug
