Report a translation problem
As far as the original question, the darkness doesn't "overlap" per se. However, they can put a "turntable" or "teleport" in the darkness which could spin you around or move you to a different square. Usually you can see a very brief "flash" of the screen when something like this happens. It's extremely subtle, but you can tell.
The only other thing that I would remind you is that you are working with a 20x20 grid. When you get near one of the ends of the grid and there's an opening, you are not stepping off the grid, but actually on the first square on the opposite end of the grid.
For example, on the grid below if you are standing on 0N,0E facing south and take one step forward, you will end up on square 19N,0E
