$35 for a remake of a 44 year old game...
that can be beat in 10 hours or less.

I played this in the 80s and have played several others like it over the years. In fact, I just finished another playthrough of the Bard's Tale Trilogy a few weeks ago. BTT has a base price of $15, and it frequently goes on sale for $2.99[isthereanydeal.com].

The dev is bonkers! There is not enough content in this game to warrant this outrageous price.

edit: Thanks for the free Steam points, boys & girls! KEEP'EM COMING!!

I didn't know this was being made and so when I saw it yesterday I was like WOW!! But it was really expensive. Still I loved the original (it was not just my first dungeon crawler rpg but...well THE FIRST ONE lol), so I bought it. What is the point of money if you can't buy things you love right?

Now I know it's early access but I read up on it first, and it sounded like most/all of the original game was already available, and just some bugs needed to be worked on etc.

I played the game for 45 minutes, created a party (fighter/cleric/cleric/thief/wizard/wizard) and headed down into the first floor. It didn't make a huge diff for my starting playthrough, but I did notice I could not make a lord or ninja at first, no matter how many points I had. They may not be in the game at all right now.

The gameplay, although the same as it was back in the day...well...to me has not aged well. You can't control much in combat, huge amount of rng, and tons of open space where nothing happens/just grinding etc. Tons of similar game for MUCH cheaper are available that have way more depth, better character customization, better combat etc. Heck, to be 100% honest Wizardry laberynth of lost souls is 100% better, 15$ (not on sale), already fully done without bugs and still hits all the nostalgia points.

I just can't recomend this over that game, or tons of other games that are better dungeon crawlers for 1/2 or less the price (heck and some that are free even).

I would pay $15 .....maaaaybe $20 (although probably wait on a sale at $20) but the price point for what you get, and....to be honest....the amount of work that seems to have been done (it's not like the graphic overhaul is amazing or anything) is totally off. I use to code back in the apple II c days and I have a decent idea of the amount of hours/work that is needed for this. The price is way off. I refunded after my time playing, I might consider getting it again just for the heck of it, but probably not, and def not for more than $10. I already have a better version (more then a few honestly) that I can play, and other than minor graphical changes, there are many versions for free online that you can play (I don't/haven't but they have them free on websites with original graphics.

I honesty 100% can't imagine there are many people out there who will enjoy the original game at all, but be turned off by the more simple graphics lol. They make absolutely no difference to me in this kind of game, and I feel many other old school gamers will feel the same. Meanwhile new players, even with QoL enhancements are not gonna enjoy the extremely simple grindfest of this game, where you don't even have much strategy in your combat etc.

I love/d this game. Back in the day it was all new, each spell was a treasure, every new level of the dungeon I had to map out, there was nothing like this, but....I am MUCH older now and very jaded and sadly.....I just can't turn back time anymore and get into this. I do hope others can, because this was/is an amazing game, but.....even so, I think charging so much is a wrong move.

My only complaint is I want the other parts of the saga. Digital Eclipse are known for the love they put into their projects and Wizardry PGOTMO is another example of that.

sounds like my cup of tea, provided you actually can learn something from your mistakes.

I agree here, $14.99 and I woulda jumped on this and got it for my bro as well, but $34.99 is waaaaaaaay too much imo for this type of game.

If it was an actual "remake", with improved gameplay mechanics, rather than just a few QoL flourishes, it might be worth the price. As it stands, it's really a "remaster"- mostly the same game but with a graphical upgrade and the option to tone down some frustrating elements.

Still, I bought it as a token of good faith that this dev, if successful, will refine the game or remaster the rest of the Llygamyn saga. I don't see anyone else stepping up to this task.

I would think all the animations in combat would keep anyone from completing the game in 10 hours. Without animations, lots of caffeine and some depends to avoid those time consuming potty breaks,,,then maybe? :)

But the appeal of this game is not about trying to beat it as quickly as possible for me. It is more about the nostalgic feel of the game while enjoying the journey, Unfortunately, the lack of controlling combat speed as the original game did has taken away that nostalgic fun for me.

Price is a HUGE turn off.

Though, I agree the price is a bit high, your solution is simple. Don't buy it. Name calling serves no purpose.

wait for a sale then OP

I agree, just don't buy it or wait for a sale. Games like these, honestly, don't sell a lot to begin with aside from those that are really into it which in that case, will buy it at the normal entry level price that its at.

So you where willing to buy it twice? Just buy it and play it and when your done let your bro play it.

Are you new to steam? If so, just wait a few months for the price to drop. Any games i am unsure of, I usually buy at 30-50 percent off.

If you don't like the price, don't buy it. What do you think complaining here is going to do for you?

It IS a bit steep

Oh good grief here we go again. *rolls eyes into the back of my head* I swear half my time on forums these days is spent talking down to people who think these games are overpriced because they're remakes or because they're short.

ONCE MORE!

Gaming is the only industry not to suffer much inflation. If you were to pay for the NES Wizardry at release in today's money, it would be over $130. Games have NEVER been priced based on length, and the remake is at standard remake prices. AND GAMES HAVE NEVER BEEN CHEAPER. Given the work done, I find it insulting that so many people these days are childish and immature enough to think games should be getting cheaper or priced based on length.

I swear, gamers these days are the most entitled in the history. The younger generations are clueless.

You know, I think a lot of people have some valid points about a game that can fit on a floppy disk should not cost $40. People can get whole bundles of remakes/remasters for that much. This is just the source code with some graphics.

i agree that $34 is a bit high but when this came out is was probably selling for around $19.

$19 in 1980 = $75.99 in 2024 by the way.

You aren't beating this game in 10 hours. It's not that type of game. Howlongtobeat has the median time for beating the main+extras at 33 hours.

Regarding size, I bought a game called Cogmind for like $24 recently. It's 50 mb and worth every cent.

We aren't buying games by the byte, that's ridiculous.

This all without taking into account that this is a historically significant game.

Wizardry and Ultima, which came out at nearly the same time, are a large part of the foundation for cRPG games.

I look forward to picking this up on sale sometime in the future.
