Is this the worst mainline Final Fantasy game?

Is it even worth playing?

It just isn't a Final Fantasy game at all though. Not at all.
There isn't one drop of 'Role Play' in it. Not one drop. So I'm kind of tempted to penalise it for that and to say that it is the worst. Just having a substantial story doesn't qualify you for a FInal Fantasy game, just copying old FF games to name and reskin your bosses and one NPC, is a bit cheap really.

There is one playable character, with no customisation that you can use be fell like you 'are' the player. Clive is clive is clive, and either you can relate and get into Clive or you can't. You can't make it your own.
You have no influence over that character. No building customisation.
No wealth of quests form which to choose.
No choice in those quests.
No real battle choice either, other than, am I going to ranged or mele this bit of the fight. Am I going to choose abilities I can do, or abilities I'm not so good at, (so why would I).
Someone mentioned FF13, but that had recognisable roleplay elements. It felt like an FF game, albeit on railtracks.
Just being a bit different from other Final Fantasy games (which is a hall mark of FF) isn't enough either. It has to be different while being a 'bit' roleplay at least.

To be frank this was just a really cynical attempt to make a competitor to Darksouls type games, or to do another Devil may cry, but to grab a larger customer market by cashing in on the Final Fantasy name.
It is to final fantasy what, any one of those remake/reboot of cult films/series is to the original, when they try to remake it with a bigger budget for a bigger audience. Its got the name but not much else.

I'd say this game is about on par with 13. I feel that 15 is better than this though simply because its more of an RPG game.

It's not the worst it has its redeeming moments being in the form of Story and Music, the combat and quest design is overall very repetitive, I'm almost finished with the game as I just started DLC 2 then I have the final boss to do, I doubt I will be giving it a replay anytime soon.

I would put 9 before 15 still

It's one of the best mainline FF games in terms of core themes based on how FF used to be before switching things up with FF7.

It has a pretty slow start, but has some great moments ruined by some cringy moments. The combat really depends on the person. Personally I think the combat was at first kinda weird didn't feel smooth until I started unlocking more of the abilities then it started feeling closer to Devil may cry in terms of combos a bit which isn't for everyone. It has some really cool mechanics but also some mechanics that feel kinda out of place.

I was gifted this game for christmas and Ive been enjoying it (more so after the "point of no return in second act" then the beginning of the game). If you are curious just watch gameplay videos . More then likely you'll get conflicting opinions from people on this hub. I personally liked 15, and 13 was alright.
