Reminder that this is not a real Final Fantasy game
This is some Western character action game that is wearing the skin of the Final Fantasy series. Go play a good FF game instead, like 6, 7, 9 or 10.

6,7,9 or 10?!

If you want a real Final Fantasy game you will exclusively play the first one.

What was better for me on PSX FF and that I only found on Mistwalker games (especially Lost Odyssey) is that you could explore villages and cities and discover many things by talking to NPCs etc.
The big world map with optional location.
FFVIII nailed had a lot of it.

That’s not exclusive to FF however, many many games ditched this design.
Like The Witcher (only 1 had this). I also play Baten Kaitos and I spend time taking to people to discover quests and info that are not that formal.
Again, that only does so much. A lot of that is wholly unnecessary, what people proclaim modern games having "filler". It was filler, literally.

It’s not a filler at all in adventure and narrative game. You must have no soul or you ar just forcing people to move modern games.
You lacks nuance, I did not mean that I do not like modern games but so can acknowledge what was better (for me if you want).

FF have pretty middling gameplay and the whole point is to live an adventure. If you brainlessly spam random fights to reach a village with nothing in it…well it’s a very very bad experience. Go play a game with a really developed gameplay.

I think you misunderstand. Exploration can be an incredible storytelling method. But it must serve a bigger purpose than merely placing NPCs around.

Dragon Quest 11 is a great example of this. Every cities have their own cultural inspirations and thematic. Their inhabitants do have their own story to tell about the areas and their culture.
A lot of RPGs barely manage to have interesting NPCs.

I think you also massively downplay the importance of 'gameplay'. In fact, those villages explorations you are talking about? That is gameplay as well.
Gameplay is not limited to the battle system, FYI.

Only once i would love for someone to describe to me what a real FF is like. I've been through them all since my childhood, and they all have their own charm, but never would i compare them, much less say it's not a real FF unless it's like "input snes or ps1/2 era ff"

That's my biggest fear indeed. :steamsad:
They've tried to make this grand re-telling with multiverse nonsense and ruining iconic scenes when... literally all they needed to do was what ATLUS did with Persona 3 Reload..

Atlus screwed up Persona 3 too by censoring stuff.

Level 0 account lmao gtfo

Nobody who actually understands the Final Fantasy franchise would be able to tell you that. That is the point a few of us are trying to make in this post.

There's a place for both turn based and action FF games to exist
I agree, and if Square pulled an 'RGG Studios' with their Ishin/Gaiden/Judgement/Like a Dragon projects and *actually* made both styles of FF here for both audiences there wouldn't be this much criticism, unfortunately it seems like Square is *only* interested in making action-based button spammers these days with their flagship series...

There's a myriad of turn based RPGs coming from SQEX in the last few years. Just off the top of my head, since 2018:
-Octopath I and II
-Bravely Default II
-Three Voice of Cards games
-SaGa Emerald Beyond
-Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince
-Various Daylife
-Triangle Strategy

And that's just new games, not counting remakes and remasters.

And hell, you could even consider Bravely Default to be akin to Judgement in this scenario, since the series is basically FF without being called FF (hell the original game was meant to be a sequel to FF 4 Heroes of Light),

No, I wasn't criticising you for proclaiming anything about liking/disliking things, you put it objectively and succinctly. Hell, I enjoyed FFXIII (XIII-2 way more though, XIII admittedly has pacing issues, but seriously deep, strong touching emotional storylines like Sazh with his son or Fang/Vanille's bond, arguably more important than Lightning and Serah's whole story), but you really nailed the evolution well.

Honestly, FF13 had some great qualities to it IMO. I think that visually, artistically and musically, it was a masterpiece.
The story while.. quite all over the place at moments, was pretty solid.
My biggest issue with XIII (at least the first iteration of it) was how they couldn't quite decide to go action or turn based, and that just made for such a weird battle system that could have been IMO a masterpiece.
That and it takes far too long for us to have a say in the party composition, although I understand they went that route to properly set up all the characters and their personal motivations.
It was interesting to discover from the FFXIII Ultimania Omega dev book that the combat system was based on X-2's. To the point that they used Yuna, Rikku, and.. Lulu, I think(?) as placeholders for the beta process.

I can't believe you people are still crying over ♥♥♥♥ like this after, what, 10+ years? Plenty of time to either move on or touch grass.

Well so there is no difference between what we said
Baten Kairosoft NPCs are not that interesting but still better than nothing or even crowds you cannot interact with.

NPCs in PSX FF had interacting things to say and triggered unformal/secret things.
That is what you say.

Replace « gameplay » by fights in my text if you want.

Many modern games NPCs are more like quests providers like in a MMO. Of even they are just impossible to interact with.

If you only fight and complete formal quests, that’s boring.

Personally the era of Final Fantasy that intrigued me the most, was the Ivalice Alliance era. Where they really tried to make Ivalice a massive deal.
FF12, Tactics (and less so FFTA and FFTA2 since they are in a fictional Ivalice) and FF12 Revenant Wings. And of course the underrated Vagrant Story.
