FF7Remake. It has better combat by far, less filler than this game, better story, generally more interesting environments, better music (though this game does have a few gems in it), and better characters. Of course this is all my opinion, but FF16 can be such a slog at times. It's too long and doesn't quite have the gameplay variety to warrant it.
Better combat? Well, I guess no imo, as FF7 is tactical combat, meanwhile FF16 is action based combat like DMC
Each game has its own gameplay, but in overall FF7 better, especially filler/cutscenes side, as FF16 pretty talkative, and it's looks like more a movie than a game cutscene whereas FF7 keep focused more.
I like both but FF7 is the most enjoyable FF game in terms of story, gameplay, beauty of the environment, and most importantly it will be more optimized than FF16

FF16 is more like ARPG while FF7 is JRPG. In the perspective of story and plot, FF7 is way longer than FF16. Not only FF7 has novels, movies and anime, there is original FF7, FF7CC, FF7 Remake and Rebirth (Not to mention in Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia). If you are the type of person which feels very suffered for waiting the full story, I will suggest playing FF16 first because FF7 will have a part 3 but I think it will come out 2027 in the earliest. FF7 story is relatively complicated if you haven't read or play many materials related.
If you prefer a more serious atmosphere, FF16 is your choice as it is mainly focus on the main plot and the theme is relatively dark even in the whole FF series. On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxing theme, you can try FF7 remake and rebirth as they have some mini games to play while doing the main quests.
PS: I think both of them have a discount now on Steam. You might want to compare the price. Actually I would prefer you buy both now, especially for Rebirth as it has pre-order bonus.
PS:If you want to get trophies for the games, FF7CC will take around 50+ hours.FF16 and FF7 Remake will take around 100+ hours. For FF7 Rebirth, it is likely around 200-300 hours.
PS: If you want to play FF16, I STRONGLY recommend you buy the complete edition which contains two DLC. I am not gonna lie, The Rising Tide DLC made me cry.
PS: I feel sad for FF16 not having movies like FF7. At least make a short anime or novel like FF15 :steamsad::ffxvi_clive_px:

If you're talking about the original FFVII, then they're so different you're really gonna have to try both to figure out if you like them. If you mean FFVII Remake, then... one question for you: if you're being honest with yourself, are you both mature and not cynical? Then I would recommend XVI. If you're a teenager or a jaded adult, I'd go with FFVII Remake+Rebirth.

But they're both amazing, you can't go wrong. If you don't like them, then FF is just not for you. And that's fine - it's not for everyone.

Thanks haha funny way to decided you say I went with 7 remake and so far I’m enjoying it I was told 16 is a 50/50 with hard core ff fans and 7 remake was loved by everyone so went with 7

7 Remakes shouldnt be your first 7 game, theyre terrible. If the original is too old for consumption, might as well dont bother. Play 15 and 16 or even start with 13.

7 remake and rebirth are the best of the "new" FF games by far.

I think the combat variety issue is mostly because this only has Clive while in 7 remake you get 4 fully fledged playable characters that are completely different from each other.
It's both the characters and the actual use of materia making use of elemental weaknesses. It's certainly a more dynamic system than FF16.

I just find the combat of 16 to be pretty mind numbing while FF7R isn't. It's partially difficulty and partially mechanical that causes FF16 to feel this way. It works, there are just so many better action-based combat systems that I wouldn't recommend it for most people.

I found combat got better after getting the 2nd Eikon. There is a lot of different ways to deal with the flyers or the tank solders. I also just came across my fist open world section of the map that I can explore without following a Quest waypoint. I am finding new monsters to fight there.

FF 7 original not the demake.

In the latest released FFs, FF15 is the one "closer" to the original FF gameplay. Or try FF7 (the original game, not the remake or rebirth).

ff16 is a visual spectacle. While FF7 R is more better combat!

Go with FF1 through either NES emulator or PS1 emulator (the steam version is doodoo). Its not only one of the best FF games but its also one of the best games ever made and it has aged fantastic.

Yeah would highly, highly recommend playing the original ff7 before tackling remake. The OG FF7 is also the pinnacle of the old-school jrpg formula and probably the most representative "final fantasy" game. You'd miss out on a lot of value in remake and rebirth if you didn't play OG FF7 first too. (I can't say anything more for spoiler reasons ^^)

I'd recommend playing FF16 now and like, tackling ff7 as a long term goal, the OG first, and then the remake/rebirth. FF16 definitely has the scope and story of a Final Fantasy game, but it's lighter mechanics wise and a lot more action oriented, so a nice stepping stone to introduce you to FF, sort of.

Eh I was mostly joking. I've played them all, but these games are older than a lot of the kids playing now and playing something as dated as OG FF7 is like watching a silent film. Sure it's alright as a long term goal for those who are really interested, but I'd probably start them with something like FF10 and going backwards from there if interested. FF10 I'd say is the best stepping stone between the old and the new.
