Audio muting when I alt + tab.
Basically, what the title says... can anyone help me *fix* this issue?

I am someone who often plays games and talks in other places simultaneously. Sometimes, I want to throw a comment or two in a friend group, but if I do, the game mutes until I click back on it.

I know that this is mostly a "skill issue" of some sort and that I should just enjoy the cutscenes, but I just can't help it. It's something that is part of me (?)

Maybe a 2nd monitor can fix your issue

It's not really an Issue perse, the easiest solution would be to just pause when you wanna tab out

My idea is to keep the cutscene playing while I throw a message or two...
My brain needs to write messages while I watch and hear them. I just can't seem to focus on one thing alone, sorry 😭

I had an audio muting issue that would occur randomly or on load from the main menu. If the audio was working, it would be crackling/distorted. Toggling off rBar support from nvidia profile inspector fixed my issue, but this is such a specific thing... it's unlikely this is the cause in your case but I thought i'd mention it. rBar is disabled by default. Seeing that in my case, the audio was GPU related. You should try to toggle off hardware acceleration where you can and try to use integrated graphics for certain non 3D applications.

Some games have a setting for this like "maintain focus" or whatever, but usually they're just built to handle it one way or the other and you can't change it AFAIK.

Are you new to PC gaming? Most games do this

Are you using the FF16Fix mod? If so, it may be the mod. The mods ini file has a command to turn audio on/off.

I'd personally rather it do this than not, if it didn't I'd have to constantly go to the volume mixer to turn it down while I do something else. That being said, if there was an toggle that would be ideal. But you don't see that very often. And square is not one to put many toggles in their pc ports.

It doesn't do this with me when I alt tab. The game doesn't even minimize per se. It's still running in full screen but you can access your windows and they just go on top of the game while the music is still playing and everything

FF16FIX lets you have the audio playing in the background.

This is very common for games though many have the option. FF16 doesn't but the mod lets you

To reply everyone, in somewhat of an order:

1 - I am not new to gaming. This 'issue' exists in many games, but most of them either have a toggle to allow audio in the background or the borderless option fixes the idea.
2 - I am not using any mod, but apparently, the FF16FIX can help me with the lack of background sound, thanks, guys!
3 - The "issue" only exists whenever I alt tab, nothing else. I am sorry if I confused some of you into thinking it was something else...

Lastly, thank you all for your support. I already got my answer, so there is no point in keeping this up!

I hate when games do this. Trying to be considerate (oh, you tabbed out to do something, so let me mute the audio for your convenience) but most of the times it's against what the players actually want.

The worst part is that the audio mutes but the game itself isn't paused. So if enemies attack you while you're tabbed out, you don't know.

FF14 had options that let we choose if we want the sound to keep playing or not.

Thank you all for your responses in this thread. I run four monitors and was on the verge of refunding this game due to this. I actually already had the fix installed but had no clue that it had the option to fix this too.
all of my previous game I played none of them I don't remember having such issues when alt + tab. because if I have then I would just take a lot of time googling to see if such issues can be fix or deal with it. unfortunately I don't remember FFVII rebirth I played have such issues when I'm alt + tab.
