I mean, its only sold 3 million in total, Horizon: Zero Dawn sold that just on PC.
This. Really hurt promotion online for this title.
Most PC players don't have a PS5
It's hard to be sure.
- The hype died down. Going exclusive on a console that didn't sale that well was a bad idea.
- Game went full action. Not necessarily bad but there are a lot of rookie mistake in the design. I like the gameplay but the lack of challenge and enemy diversity hurts it.
- The game does quite a few things very well like the story and its general presentation but fails completely in other aspects like exploration, gear variety and crafting, etc...
- Lots of people have technical issues
You are on to something... FFX sold 21 million. Nowadays we have more accessibility to games, broader promotions, more gamers. Heck, this is actualy a gaming culture almost. You do the math...
I agree with that.
I woud also add super strong competition as a factor. We had Wukong (potentially GOTY), Space Marine 2 and God of War: Ragnarok. Many players had to decide where to invest their time and/or money.
b) A big majority of their fans are craving for a turn based game with an equal production value comparable to FF 16 or FF7 Remake. So they only make things harder for themselves by displeasing that majority for an eternity. Despite several new Games like BG3, Persona 5 or Honkai Star Rail showing that this genre is still in demand.
Remake and 16 are good games for sure, but they have a high demand for aforementioned type of game and are losing out on that opportunity. Maybe the rumored FF9 Remake will be that game. Who knows?
c) Even though FF 16 is pretty good, at least imo from what i have seen so far, you can immediately tell that this is not a game for everyone. You need to be fine with a huge amount of relatively long cutscenes and the cinematic action approach of the game. A lot of people are very impatient concerning this matter. This game takes a lot of time until you really get to the core of its gameplay.
This is a branding problem, by having roman numerals after the sequel, they're indicating that the game is a sequel in most common terms. That scares people off because there's 15 (there's more but to them, roman numerals) games before that.
FF's problems don't come from gameplay or release schedules or even buggy products.
They come from misbranding and exclusive deals. That's why they're attempting to address both. Exclusives are done going forward, they just have to clear the exclusive deal catalogue up 1st and from what I've heard they're considering changing the roman numeral system they have since it's causing them messaging issues.
