Thank You FFX and Goodbye FinalFantasy

FFX made me fall in love with strategy games. I remember being pissed off as a 8y kid asking my dad why he bought the most boring game ever, FFX. I had no clue how spoiled I actualy was. I wouldn't say spoiled because we were very poor. I don't even know how my dad could afford ps2 and this game.

Anyway, I was pissed off. I went outside to kick rocks, better than playing this stupid game I thought. Now that I look back, it must've been very crushing for my dad to buy such a expensive console/game on release for his son only to spit on it, spending money he probably doesnt have.

Eventually I got so bored I gave it another try. I wanted a brainless button mashing game where I can slay my enemies, instead I got this extremely slow paced, walking cinematic/ simulator. This game was everything I despised from first impression. Fast forward 25 years later and this game is still the best game I have ever played next to lineage 2. I learned to enjoy the challenge of using my brain. It was not easy to finish those puzzles in temples as a 8y old. FFX helped me develope and grow, not just intellectually but emotionally as well. When I was a baby I never cried, not a single tear. My parents were worried so they decided to see a doctor. Short story told: Nobody knew what was going on, but they feared for the worst.

I'm 33 now and I cried maybe 3 or less times in my entire lifespan, one of them was during FFX ending. Yes its that good. FFX had literally everything maxed out: story, rpg, strategy, progression and music. My only complaint would be difficulty as it seemed pretty easy replaying it when I got older, but it was absolutely perfect for a young kid. It's no coincidence lineage 2 is my 2nd favorite game because it has great music as well. To Zanarkand piano, Suteki da ne, Besaid theme, Hymn of fayth all versions, to just name a few. I can't forget "otherworld" Jecht battle theme. I listen to these master pieces till this very day. I'm genuinely curious what your favorite themes are in FFX.

Obviously I can write a book about this but I'm going to cut it short. Why did I write this wall of text here in FF16 section? The last few releases I felt more and more distance between me and Finalfantasy. It's like we were growing apart... Everything that I loved about FF games slowly vanished. From strategy, slow pace TB, RPG... everyhing faded away slowly. What's left is their story and the characters... don't get me wrong, story and characters were always good even in latest releases, but that alone won't hold the front. And how far did we actualy progress in cinematics? Please go have a look at FFX intro, that's 23 years ago!!!

The only reason I would be playing latest releases is pure because of the name "FinalFantasy". Soon that won't matter anymore, because every excitement has been sucked dry out of that name. If I want button bashing then I can look at literally every other game company. There is not much left that sets Finalfantasy apart from other competitors. I have to bid my goodbye but not farewell as I still have hopes they might turn it around.

Perhaps kids that grew up on FF7 have a more positive outlook because the reception for FF7 rebirth is significantly better than FF16's.

I feel the same way and I enjoy FFXVI. I think it's a fun game, but I think it's time for people like you and me to realize Final Fantasy is long gone. I hadn't realized FFX came out 23 years ago. The series has been mediocre or just downright bad longer than its golden years. From 1987 to 2001 Square put out 10 great titles. Even towards the end there you could argue some of the later titles were flawed but they had that Final Fantasy identity to them. Here XVI stands with a completely action based combat system, no party members or jobs, no towns to really visit or shops to enter, no overworld travel, nothing that reminds me of Final Fantasy. I think you just have to accept that those days are long gone and that there are other games carrying on its legacy.

I think FFX is hugely overrated and it is the exact corridor game as FFXIII.

I still like XVI.

FFX has some sappy bits but FFVIII is the most depressing by far if you know the Rinoa = Ultimecia theory. That ♥♥♥♥ is crushing, man.

This is actually my favourite FF game in a long time. I don't mind linear, but ff13 was way too linear, and confusing at that. Plus I didn't even like the characters. I did like ff14 rebirth but thats an mmorpg so dunno if it counts. I didn't bother with ff15 because idk it just seemed like something I wouldn't like.

I did like ff7R too and I'm looking forward to rebirth. But its nice to have something in a new setting, thats a story rich single player game, as those are the kind of games I like.

The devs said that theory is bs so dunno why it gets you down.
The real depressing thing about VIII is finding out that half the game was cut due to them running out of money. Originally Laguna was supposed to be the protag for half the game during his fight against Adel and this part of the game was supposed to have the overworld map as well.
