Stuttering after cutscenes
I'm seriously exhausted... I've tried almost everything, but the game still starts stuttering after a couple of cutscenes, and the only fix is to restart the game. My fairly old PC can deliver smooth gameplay, which I'm totally fine with, but something is definitely wrong with the cutscenes. At first, I thought that 8GB of VRAM might be too little for 2880x1620 resolution, but even at 720p, the game stutters after cutscenes — even the menu and cursor lag!

What's frustrating is that I can play for hours without a single issue, but as soon as I progress in the story and start watching cutscenes, the stuttering gets worse with every new one. The frame rate keeps spiking between 28 and 30 FPS over and over, no matter what's happening on the screen.

Here are my current settings: 2880x1620 + Legacy FSR on Quality, High preset, 30 FPS lock.

My rig: i7-9700F, 32GB 3600 MHz, RTX 2070 Super with a mild overclock (and no, it's not the OC — I tested without it).

I really hope Square Enix does something about this... :feste:

Sorry, fren, maybe you should upgrade to a 4070 or more...

Nothing will help here for now, you can only send a report about this error to the developers. 1660 super and 5700x have the same problem, after a couple of fast travels the fps constantly drops, it’s very disappointing when the slow motion starts at 10 fps in cutscenes. The maximum that can be done is to make the game a high priority for the sake of smaller stutters, this partly helped me.

Wow, thanks for the super helpful advice, fren! I never would've figured that out without you! :feste:

It's sad but what can I do...

Oh, and what about the folks with the 4090 who were posting about similar issues here? Yeah, I’m sure they should just wait for the 5090. That’ll totally fix everything.

I have a 4080 super and it runs rather swell tbh with DLSS3 on.

Dunno about the 4090 dudes.

Thanks, I’m absolutely thrilled for you. Really.

Which email does Square Enix use for error reports?

Don't mind it, I’ve already submitted a report on their website.

I notice the sarcasm but I am serious...

Try disabling Super Resolution altogether, for me it seems to be the cause, along with limited VRAM (RTX3070 with 8GB here). Lowering resolution then to raise framerate to reasonable level.

As one might expect, the card is too vram-limited at least to run 4K natively, but at 1440p it seems to run fine and I don't experience the after-cutscene drops anymore. 4K fps stays solid 20-30, 1440p might drop occassionally to 40ish but usually sticks to 60fps or higher.

Optional things to try if native resolution works:
For me, 1440p with DLSS Quality doesn't seem to trigger the drops, when running that as fullscreen (stretched to 4K). DLSS Quality is optional and not major improvement in image quality.

One might also use Nvidia Image Scaling to get a slightly better image quality, at least for me it works nicely that way.

My setup:
8700k, 16gb ram, rtx3070, 4K monitor
SuperRes disabled, all settings low, display mode fullscreen, 1440p
Nvidia Image Scaling enabled from driver, 20% sharpening

These give me better performance than 4K borderless and DLSS Ultra Perf, most likely due to using less vram. Even legacy sr seems to use more vram and triggers the after-cutscene drops.

I think I've tried something like this before, but I'm not sure, so I'll give it another go. Thanks! :masterworks:

Hmm for me this is what I did my monitor is 3440x1440 with a 2080S GPU obviously I wont be getting a good FPS.Did some research mix and match those who gave tips and this is the settings that I end up with the game

FSR 3
frame generation on
resolution 2560x1080
using ff16fix mod to unlock 30FPS cap for the cutscene
all graphic settings to high

don't know if it will work for you as well

Additional details
CPU: i7-12700F
RAM: 32GB

Usually I have 40FPS but same with you after cutscene I will get around 10-15 FPS
but after I change to this settings I get 100-144FPS

Hmm, I tried Frame Generation when I first started playing, but for some reason I settled on 30 FPS lock later. I also tested FFXVIFix, but I don't think I've tried combining it with Frame Generation for the cutscenes. Maybe that's the 'key' to fixing it. Thanks!

For me FSR3 + FG is about the worst possible combination. FSR3 only at ultra perf I get almost 60fps at 4K, but after cutscenes it drops to low 20s. FSR FG gives me approx 15 fps even without framerate drop from cutscenes.

Most likely reason is that FG takes more VRAM, and if already capped on vram, it will not help.
