I read a joke on Reddit where someone said that Call of Duty Black Ops 6 (310 GB) will be the first game to ship with a SSD which reminded me of Pokemon Colosseum which came with a free memory card for the GameCube because it was so large.
There is also a conspiracy theory that developers are intentionally pushing for large file sizes because it encourages you to keep the game installed (who would want to download 100 gb+ again?) as well as make it harder to install and play other games because of storage limits. Since many games or going for live service and microtransactions this means you spend more time and money on their games rather than the competition.
Obviously just a conspiracy theory and I think the real reason is simply that developers either don't care enough about the issue or can't fix the it due to lack of programming skills.
And oh yeah, here's a little secret, you can delete the game when you're done with it.
The PS5 uses Kraken a hardware compression system to reduce the size of games. You're going to get embarrassed here if that's your level of ignorance.

Most of the time you do NOT need more than 5 or 6 games installed. Sure, it's nice to pack-rat games, but most people have a fast enough internet to re download games as needed.
If you have a much slower internet then 1 or more thing should be happening:
1. Buy games on a physical disc. Then you can install on the fly
2. Buy a storage expansion for the ps5. 1 to 4TB ssds are relatively inexpensive. Then you can pack rat games vs re downloading them. You can even get SUPER cheap slower, USB SSDs for the PS5 to store games and copy them to the faster, built in SSD when you want to play them.
Oh FYI, smaller installations mean higher compressed textures which will lower how well a game looks. The reason the installs are getting so big is that GPU VRAM has grown in size allowing for larger, less compressed texture. Most gamers want the highest quality graphics. So that = larger installs.
THIS WILL NOT CHANGE. If fact, games will only grow in size as VRAM and system RAM increases on PCs (and as newer gen consoles come out). So either deal with it, or stop AAA gaming. I work for a gaming studio. I guarantee your calls for smaller downloads are going to be ignored. Some studios do release a smaller installation then offer a free "DLC" with higher rez texture packs, but that requires more development time to adjust the game for that. So most studios don't bother.
The fact of the matter is: if you want to play AAA games, get more storage. Internet speed isn't that much of a factor as you could even wait 5, 8, or 12 hours for a game to download, but as long as you have a lot of storage (which is cheap), you don't have to DL it again.
I respect your opinion, but it's a very unrealistic one.
And if any of you have been in the known for the past year. SSD are no longer cheaper and are increasing and increasing due to on purposely low stock and pure greed
You can get a 1TB m2 nvme for the PC for 60$ LOL. What are you smoking?
You can get a CHEAP, SLOW, 16TB USB drive for 26$ at walmart. Too slow for gaming, but fast enough to store games so you don't have to re download them.
You can even get cheap, standard SSDs (non m2 nvme) which is just fine for gaming too.
Crucial P3 Plus 4TB PCIe Gen4 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD, up to 5000MB/s - CT4000P3PSSD8 = 230$ VERY REASONABLE ... and 4TB slightly slower drives for just under 200$
SSDs are NOT expensive
You could even get a 4TB HDD for 80$ for you PC to store games, and then copy them to a fast 1TB SSD for gaming.
Storage expensive? NO LOL. They have slightly, and I mean slightly, gone up in price over the past year due to high demand, but nothing earth shattering.
Sounds like a scam Dave.
C = 500GB m2.nvme
D = 4TB m2.vme
E = 500GB Fast SSD (dedicated to Windows Indexing and Page file) and other non gaming software.
Since I have a 5Gbps fiber connection, I no longer have a need for huge storage, but, if I still had my old 300Mbps internet, I'd probably still have huge amounts of storage. Eventhnough SSDs have SLIGHTLY gone up in price this past year, they are still DIRT cheap and no reason for a AAA gamer not to have a few TB in storage.
Petty ridiculous statement. I for one have played 14 games (and some demos on top) in just the last two weeks alone, add another 16 for the two weeks previous. Not everyone just plays a game and then forgets about it forever.
Most of the size is high quality images, and high quality audio. Blame the enthusiasts and the people with millions to blow on their 4K rigs and professional audio rigs, not the developers.
An option to exclude the 4K textures would be nice.
