Locked at a constant 20FPS? help plis
The other day I upgraded my rig and made a huge leap, from a GTX 970 to a 4070 and so on. I've tried many different games and they all play much better, FFXVI however locks me at ~20 FPS (unless I use AMD FSR3 + Frame Gen, then it's roughly 30-40 FPS). Despite this, the GPU is also at 99% utilization.

I've already done a DDU post rig upgrade, updated all my drivers, re-installed the game several times, deleted some local files created from when the game compiles its shaders, etc.

At this point I'm not sure what else I can do, but I'm also kinda clueless so I'll take any advice I can get.

Specs:
GPU: GTX 4070
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700
RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000MHz
MB: MSI Pro B650-S Wi-Fi
PSU: Corsair RM750e 750W

If you have a 4070 you should have the game set to DLSS 3, pick a DLSS quality level AND use DLSS frame gen. On a 4K line of nvidia GPU, you should NEVER use AMD FG & scaling unless that's all a game supports. Using AMD Frame Gen and upscaling on an nvidia will not look as good nor perform as well as using DLSS. If using DLSS gives you less performance vs DLSS in the game, something is wrong (either with the game or your rig).

If you're trying to play in 4K on that GPU, that would be your issue. The 4070 isn't really good for 4K in many games. It's just not powerful enough. You may have to put DLSS on performance or ultra performance OR run the game at 1440p. You may also have to turn down some game quality settings. I'm just guessing here because you didn't specify what resolution you are running the game.

With my 4090, I run the game at 1440p, All settings Maxed in the game, and I get 120 FPS with DLSS Frame Gen enabled and DLSS set to DLAA. If I do 4K, and want to keep 120 FPS, I must set upscaling to balanced or performance.

That said, the game locks all cut-scenes at 30 fps and does seem to over-use the GPU a bit which hopefully will be fixed at release. However, this wouldn't cause 20 fps on your 4070. The only reason I can think is you're trying to run the game at 4K with the settings maxed out. The game also has several situations that overuse the CPU, or GPU, so much, that even my FPS drops to the 30s for a few seconds at a time, but keep in mind this is a DEMO and not the actual game.

a 4090 Is 2x more powerful vs a 4070. So at 1440p, you should be getting 60 fps where I get 120. Getting 20fps, constantly, shows that you're either runing the game in a resolution and quality settings too high for that 4070 OR there's some unknown issue going on.

Hey, thanks for your input. I play on a 144hz 1440p monitor, so if what you say is anything to go by, that should still suffice for decently smooth gameplay.
You were right about the super resolution setting. I can achieve higher FPS with NVIDIA DLSS3 + DLAA upscaling, though it's still at most 40 FPS. Putting the game at low settings + 720p does not help either lol, still 40 FPS.
It's really strange cuz so far this has only happened with FFXVI. FFXIV, Helldivers 2, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Dead Space Remake have all been running smoothly.

Yeah at 1440p, you should be getting a constant 50-60 FPS with the game maxed out, DLSS FG on, and DLSS upscaling on quality. Try quality or balanced vs DLAA. The 4070 isn't as good as the 4090 at upscaling performance.

FF games use a proprietary engine that's made for consoles, and the games don't port very well to the PC. the exception is the FF7 remake which uses Unreal, and that has very good PC performance.

that said, the demo is REALLY unoptimized and uses more of the GPU than it should and has many situations where it gets CPU bound and lags out (even on the best gaming CPUs). In general, FF16 is an poorly optimized mess on both PC and PS5

FF16 also has performance issues on the PS5. At 4k, it runs at 30 fps, and on performance mode (upscaled to 4K with lesser settings), it doesn't get much more than 45fps. For an action RPG, this is 100% unacceptable. For a turn based RPG, 30-45 FPS would actually work ok in many cases.

You may also want to enable VRS in the game. You will lose some visual quality, but it will add some more performance to the game. I have it off as I don't need the perf boost.

That said, you should NOT need a 4090 to run the game with maxed out quality settings at 1440p.

1440p, 144hz, DLSS with FG at Balanced, VRS on and I get 40 FPS. One thing of note is that combat seems to go at half the speed, it's much slower, which to me means that FG is only serving as a compensatory measure to the actual FPS (being I guess 20 and not 40).

I won't disagree your suggestion is likely the solution, there's just something wrong with the game or my rig. Not many share my issues from what I can see.
Oh well, hopefully this is something SE can solve this later.

ALL fg does is almost double the FPS on some GPUs. It's about 50-75% more FPS depending on the game and GPU. It helps CPU and GPU bound games get in more frames. Also there is no balance setting for FG. It's either on or off. Only the up-scaling has balance settings.

I think it's mostly the game, and that you initially had the settings wrong. The game has piss poor optimizing on both the PC and PS5.

On my system, after beating a boss, when the screen blurs and shows post combat rewards, my FPS drops into the 40s. That right there says something is wrong.

Hopefully this is just a piss poor demo and the actual game is better, but after playing it on the PS5, I do not have high hopes.

I only want to play on the PC for better performance vs the PS5 and to get a mod to remove the god awful filter they use in the game that adds this grey/yellow tint to many scenes that just looks AWFUL.

I played it on a rtx 4070 1440p 240hz monitor, everything maxed out I get 110+ fps all the time, this is using diss3 frame gen and dlss set to quality

My cpu is a 5800x so, yours is better, might push more fps then me.

Yeah… and that goes for most other people too. I‘m an outlier but just don‘t know why :l
