You've tried different controllers and different usb slots? hmmm. I wonder if there's some kind of software conflict.... Perhaps try closing all apps and services, except those that are essential.
Anyway, sorry, I wish I could be more help. Occasionally my controller stops working, but its just matter of unplugging it and plugging it back in, and it happens in all games and quite seldom.
EDIT: Oh and don't forget to unplug all unnecessary usb devices! Printers, webcams, whatever you have plugged in that you don't need to play the game, unplug it.
I haven't had an issue with the controller cutting out in this game, but as iameatingjam stated, it sounds like a hardware or hardware configuration issue in Windows. However, if that were the case, it would also be having issues in other programs and games.
If it is only this game, have you tried verifying the game's files? Most games use DirectInput in Windows to handle the controller, so generally the sort of issue you're talking about shouldn't be a problem in just a single program.
It could be a scenario with two controllers being active at the same time and the game being "confused" as to which controller it is supposed to be using; I recall reading something in the patch notes about them solving an issue with the game switching input devices, but you made this post after the recent patch, so I'm assuming you're still having the same issue. If you haven't tried the game after the patch, maybe try it again and see if the issue still persists.
Since you say you tried a different controller and it behaved the same way it points towards the problem being either with your current installation of Windows, possibly something wrong with your USB ports, or maybe the bluetooth dongle you're using.
Does it do the same disconnecting when you use it wired? I know "using it wired" is not a real solution since the point is to use a controller wirelessly, but just for troubleshooting purposes. If it works while wired but disconnects while wireless then it could be the wireless dongle or bluetooth dongle.
Check power management and power settings.
Make sure the box is unchecked for Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Or under USB Settings, select Disable for USB Selective suspend settings.
I will note that this game does switch to keyboard & mouse prompts under the slightest provocation; even if the mouse moves slightly if my chair is touching my desk and I move a bit, that's enough for it to think I want to use kb&m.
This sounds like the best advice for the behaviour you're describing, but if you've already tried that, I'm really not sure what the issue could be. Also, did you try removing the USB Bluetooth dongle and having only one controller active via USB? Considering how sensitive this game seems to be about active control devices, you might want to eliminate any other possible variable that is causing it to switch inputs and turn off the one you were using as a result by trying that. It would also eliminate the scenario of the USB connected device trying to connect to the dongle and then "confusing" the game as which interface to use.
Yes, same thing here. I'm probably just going to switch to Mouse & Keyboard. I have an Xbox 20th anniversary wireless controller, and it doesn't behave like this in any other game. I'll keep troubleshooting, but it's very annoying to have it happen in random parts so it's not even predictable.
Okay so I think I might have a fix you can try. I just played for about 30 mins after doing this and I didn't have any disconnects.
My xbox controller needed a firmware update.
Go to the Windows Store > Search for "Xbox Accessories" > Install
Once installed, run the app.
You need to plug in your controller via a USB cable to have the app detect the controller.
Click the Ellipses ( ... ) button for more options > then click Firmware Update (If there is an update, it will show up as an option).
It took me about 5 minutes for the update to do its thing. I hope this helps.
