FINAL FANTASY XVI

Stuttering & No 4K/1440p Options
Ever since I downloaded the game, I've had tons of stuttering/freezing that happens far too often. I've verified the game's files were what they should be on two separate occasions, with no issues found, and even reinstalled the game to no avail. For reference, I've got the most up-to-date versions of the game Windows 11, and graphics driver along with an i9-14900KF, a 4070S, 64GB DDR5-6000 RAM, and a 2TB SSD. Given all of that, I don't see a reason why the game's poor performance has anything to do with my hardware or software, but then again, I might be wrong.

In addition to the stuttering/freezing, which has even happened during important cutscenes and boss fights, I haven't seen any resolution higher than 1920x1080 since 1.0.1 was released. Even though my monitor's native resolution is 1920x1080, I'm able to play every game on my computer at 4k except FFXVI. Knowing myself, I may have accidentally changed a setting that removed any and all options for better resolutions, although I have no recollection whatsoever of messing with any graphics-related settings outside of specific games and my Nvidia-related applications. The only two of those I've used are GeForce Experience and the new Nvidia app.

Speaking of those two apps, FFXVI went AWOL from the list of games in said apps. I distinctly recall downloading a driver just days before the game released that advertised support for the game, which isn't the case anymore for me. I had to manually add it to the game list in the Nvidia app only to find that I can't optimize the game at all. As I stated earlier, I have the most up-to-date versions of both the game and graphics driver.

What I stated above is my long-winded background information dump required to help someone answer my single question: How do I fix all of this BS? I just want to play the game at a resolution > 1080p with nothing unintentional happening.

There's a million threads here about improving performance so I wont rehash that again when literally every other thread is about it.

BUT I might be able to help when it comes to the downsampling. I heard some people complaining about having issues with that after leaving driver version 561.09, which is why I haven't left it. I dunno if they've fixed that or what the situation is but worth a try if you aren't on that version.

Also, if you are on fullscreen, try borderless, and if you're borderless, try full screen. I find in some games only one or the other works, don't ask me why.... Oh and change your desktop resolution to the one you want in game, do that before the previous step!!

I'm sure between those 3 you can get downsampling working again! (You are using dldsr for that, right?)

EDIT: Okay I'll say one thing on performance... make sure every single app that isn't vital to system function is closed.

Try checking full screen mode.
Borderless window will only have monitor’s native output resolution and performance can be adjusted with upscaling or dynamic resolution.

However, the game needs about 16GB of VRAM if you want to play at 4K even if upscaled from 1440p with DLSS/FSR quality.

I've always played it in full screen mode and yet don't have the option for >1080p gaming. In all honesty, I'm at a loss for what to do.

Well try the other one then. Did you install 561.09? Did you change your desktop resolution to the one desired in game?
