Horrible PC port, unplayable in it's current state.
Recently bought a mid range gaming PC, went through FF7 remake, Baldur's Gate 3, and a number of newer games without issue. After dropping 107$CAD on FFXVI and spending hours upon hours scouring the internet and trying every possible fix i have given up on trying to make the game playable. How on earth did Square Enix let this happen?
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME IN ITS CURRENT STATE!!
specs:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060
12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400F 2.50 GHz
16.0 GB (15.9 GB usable)

They really need to fix this game, godamnit, i paid a lot for it... game start to slow down all the time, they only optimized the first section of the game so they cold sell it with the demo, feeling scammed. I have to keep restarting my computer for the game to work again...

Your specs are better than mine, and I played the game perfectly fine to 100% completion.

Looking at his profile he's put in 66 hours into it and almost 7 recently, so I would say that's a good amount per gaming session.

It is playable with those specs but it requires some tweaking, compromises and some general computer knowledge.

Not calling you stupid or anything, maybe its something else. But yeah, it is a demanding game, nevertheless, it can be made to work 8gb 4060s/3060 tis, 3070s.

Its just.... ugh... I've gone over this so many times. Just look to some other threads if you want help. Or maybe if you ask nicely I'll try to help you out. But sounds like you don't want help, sounds like you just want to vent so vent away.

I'm sorry to say but 8GB on the 4060 is ridiculously low. Less than previous gen 3060 12GB had.

8GB is not enough for some newer games. And I don't think we should blame devs for Nvidia's decision to give less memory, than few years old consoles have. 8GB is absurd for new cards.

You're absolutely right. But SE shouldn't have put requirements how they are, perhaps some of this mess could have been avoided. Then again that could have meant less sales. Also less pissed off customers though. I wonder if there was any heated meetings over it.

Its not just that, i have played many games that require much more than 8gb vram, the fps wont suddently tank after a few hour of gameplay. Theres something really wrong with the game coding and the way it handles the cache. I've seen some depots on steamDB recently on FFXVI, hope they are looking for a sulution for this.

Well there's no vram leak I have tested extensively. It just uses a lot. Did you want help? What are your specs?

Ryzen 7 5700x , rx 6600 xt , 32 gb ram ddr4 3200mhz . Temps are fine, SAM disabled.
I was using the following settings:

Using ffxvi fix mod for cutscenes
FSR 3
Frame gen activated
Dynamic res off + quality res
Graphical fidelity: High
Terrain effects: medium
Textures: low
Shadows: medium
Water: High
Density: high
NPC ammount medium

the 3 next boxes checked

VRAM rovering around 7400-7700 , sometimes it goes to 8000 and goes back to 7700.
Energy settings set to high performance.
Driver 24.10.1 freshly installed.

Frame generation needs extra vram.
If a game shows 7,7GB utilisation it doesn’t mean it doesn’t need more. It can mean a whole block of data had to be pushed out. Other games behave similarly or fake the performance secretly lowering the image quality.
From my testing the game uses about 10GB at 1080p and close to 11GB with frame generation.

Sadly, this is yet another game where recommended specs are wrong.

I guess im updating next year, games are getting more and more demanding and devs are now using fsr and frame gen as a crutch.

Your system may just be too weak to run this game. But to have a chance you need to turn framegen off. its just going to eat more vram. Stable frametimes > higher averages when it comes to the experience.

Turn everything to low, don't worry I've tried it, it actually doesn't effect things as much as you'd think. 30 fps framecap. You could leave motion blur on to help smooth the transition between frames.

You might have better luck with legacy scaling, thats what some people on weak hardware tell me anyway. But play around with them and see what feels best just yeah, no framegen, just makes things worse.

VRAM rovering around 7400-7700 , sometimes it goes to 8000 and goes back to 7700.

Hmm.... that sounds kinda low for the settings, have you checked your shared memory? Reporting isn't always 100% accurate. And it depends how you're measuring as for what you'll see.

Whats your dram usage at? If the game uses more than 12GB its vram overflow.

Should go without saying at this point but you are closing every single app you're not using, right? That includes discord and your browser and everything else. Windows also likes to run all kinds of things in the background, some can even use vram. Somebody made a thread about this recently, let me try and find you the link.

Here it is:

Good luck.

30 fps isn't that bad. I'm playing a game at 30 fps right now actually, a game that is way too reliant on a single thread. Its not so bad. Just takes like 30 minutes or so to get used to it. Like I said I think motion blur helps but I know some people hate motion blur so if you're one of those people keep it off I guess.

But consistent frametimes is most important for getting an experience that feels okay.
