I know you unlock the Jester by beating King's Court in Quest-Mode (Checking out the XMLs helped alleviating my curiosity). Other than that not really sure because I'm stuck at King's Court waves 6 and 8.
Actually Sunken City, not King's Court. jester is set to true in level 08, which corresponds to Sunken City.
Oops, my bad. You're right, just checked again...
I'm hearing people saying purple unlocks after certain rounds of last man standing but nothing conclusive.
What I believe:

Purple Archer - Play on Twilight Spire
Yellow Archer - Find all the secret Triangles (in trials)
Cyan Archer - Play quest mode on Sunken City
White Archer - Unlock and explore Moonstone

And for the maps:

TowerForge - Beat the corrupted King in King's Court (Quest Mode)
Moonstone - Play TDM in Sacred Ground
Sunken City - Choose random a couple times in vs level select
Ascension - Unlock all other maps

is twilight spire a map you get right off the bat?
Yes. Second map in level select

Yellow Archer is correct.

I unlocked Moonstone by playing lots of games in Twilight Spire on Last Man Standing.

Sunken City seems to be correct as well, went random about 5-10 times.

After you unlock all maps you can find a Cipher on the last page of the Archives.
The Cipher consists of 3 parts, each takes 3 directional inputs, and each part is linked to the 3 secret maps.
The first two Moonstone Trial stages and the Moonstone Quest stage have the symbols "right, right, down" written on the walls in glowing orange. There are no similar symbols on any other stage.

Not exactly. If anyone really doesn't want to find them on their own (the symbols match those of the unlockable levels, so they're not that hard to find), here they are:

Anyone know any specifics on the purple archer? I've definately played on that map a number of times and have not unlocked the character

also anyone have a guide for the triangles?
You'll find a guide to the "tri-forces" here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/251470/discussions/0/558749825344245575/
Stumbled across the one in Twilight Spire 2 by mistake/dumb luck and had no idea what that was about. Got the game on the Ouya and I gotta say all this extra content really made the second purchase worthwhile.
Can't seem to get that damn moonstone to appear
@Videogames, see our discussion here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/251470/discussions/0/558749825446785275/

We believe we have solved it.
