Buy it for the multiplayer.
What I love about this game is playing it with friends. There's the "30 seconds of fun" that Bungie was aiming for with their games, that appears over and over again. What's even more cool about it, is because it's a local multiplayer game, and because gameplay is extremely crisp and rewarding, YOU throw yourself in the 30 seconds of fun. Not the game designers who are "pacing" the game for it's longevity. From the second the round starts to the second you secure the win, this game is amazing. It's a blast. It's something I know I'll play for years, just because every single time I play it, I find myself smiling.
If you want to know the scale this game is played in my life, I ran a video game-based after school program last year, at my local highschool. In our first year, we averaged about 32 students per session, and on the days we were running, we prevented 4 kids from having a smoke in their hand, and instead, they had controllers. Most of all, everybody left smiling. This is the game the kids loved to play, because the second you played it ou became a part of the group. It was easy to get into. It was fun no matter what. Teachers challenged students. The "nerds" were friends with "the jocks" and "the cheerleaders". It's a game that brings people together, and hopefully if everything goes right, in 2017, I'll have 3 different schools run the same program, and have highschool students of all ages band together and rock the couch multiplayer.
If you DO buy it for the single player, I absolutely have to say, it isn't worth it UNLESS you buy the expansion. I'm not kidding about that either. I feel I have to say that, because of the way the game's lore and secrets are designed - the game is made to be played over and over again, even after you've done everything. The expansion adds enough layers that I think that it's justified, in my personal opinion. For you to actually enjoy vanilla single player, you gotta grind it out. so for the singleplayer experience, that's what I got for you. I personally love it, but my opinion on singleplayer is biased as heck. Good luck!
