You should try the classic games like Sonic 1, 2 , CD they are free on mobile . Theres also Sonic Orgins which is a collection of all the classic games but ive heard mixed opinions on that so not sure if they are in good quality or not

You need to relax, it’s THEIR first game. They can pick up the continuity on their own. Besides, the “classic” incarnations are referred to as their past selves in both the sonic story AND shadow gens

According to the lore, yes, Classic Sonic is a younger version of Sonic.
Modern Sonic even says this to Classic Sonic at the end of the game:

This is different from 2D Mario where he's more or less the same Mario in 2D as he is in 3D.

he just says enjoy his future, thats not specific to age. it was just a tongue-in-cheek reference to the series evolution
