they've expressed multiple times that they've wanted to do both a remake and sequel to adventure games. but they want to get the new recruits more time with the hedgehog engine.
also frontier was not a mistake it's one of sonic franchises biggest successes in recent years and the reason shadow gen was even allowed to happen. if sonic frontier failed then sonic would be no more as the dev teams themselves had stated.
i'd say quite the opposite now. sega actually has a direction they want sonic to go now. after the success of frontier they now know that people WANT story based sonic games. which should have been a no brainier considering the most successful games have been frontier adventure and adventure 2. with cult classics like heroes and unleashed being runners up.
honestly instead of more sports games i'd argue we need LESS racing games i am honestly sick of the "sonic in a car." games they keep pumping out every year. never made sense and never will make sense.
however mini games like sonic advance rush and even sonic battle would defiantly be something i want to see going forward.
