How to fix stuttering, lagging, fps drop. (hopefully)
-- Update--
I am personally having issues again but maybe this post will still help someone
-- end update --

OK, I think I finally was able to get this game consistently running well thanks to some helpful YouTube videos. I thought I would post here in case some people are searching for solutions on the steam forum.

For reference to my own issue. The game would run fine at first but after 15 minutes or so the game would slow to a crawl. And if I started on the Shadow campaign then switch to the Sonic Campaign, the Sonic campaign would start at about 10 fps from the get go.

I tried updating my gpu drivers, making sure the game was set to use my NVIDIA gpu in GeForce experience, verifying my game files, making sure I have the correct runtime, and nothing worked (although for a moment I thought it did. You may have seen my previous post)

So here is the long list of everything I did to finally get this game to where I could play it for longer than 15 minutes. Some of it is excessive, but "gotta go fast!".

1)
In windows, go to the games executable files and set them to run as admin.

2)
Update your GPU graphic drivers.

3)
In your GeForce Experience app (or whatever the AMD version is called) make sure the game is set to use your GPU only.

4)
In Windows, go to the graphics settings and make sure to set the game to use your GPU only.

5)
In Steam, go to the games launch options and set it to use "-dx11".

6)
Uninstall C++ redistrubutable files and download the newest ones from Microsoft.

- I did not do numbers 7 and 8 but read it can help.

7)
Disable the steam overlay for the game in the Steam settings.

8)
Disable any game overlays in Geforce software.

Here is a link to the YouTube video where I got some of the ideas.

I also found a similar video talking about fixing the crashing on startup issues. While I did not need it, I skimmed over it and it seems to have some helpful info.

If anyone else is having this issue use Special K. In sonic generations set your monitor refresh rate to 60 hz either in Special K or in Windows. Sonic Gens has a bug in every version that causes it to occasional run 1 or 2 frames higher than it's max fps (this does not happen at 30 fps in the pc version).

Thank you for posting a possible fix and trying to help a fellow Sonic.
Unfortunately, my monitor was already set to 60hz in windows. I checked the settings and played again and the game still starts to slow down like crazy after playing 1-2 levels.

I tend to play the game in short bursts so anyway but it is still a bummer.
