Only Rush 1 and Colours DS got acknowledged as far as handheld games go, seeing as those were the only two zones brought back from a handheld game. None of the Game Gear, Master System or Game Boy Advance games got any of its zones included in the 3DS version of Generations and it was a real shame as it could've easily distinguished itself from the primary version while still following the source material.
I feel a similar way about the rival and boss battles. We could've seen Fang the Sniper and Sunset Park's boss for the Classic era, Gemerl from Advance 3 and a boss from any of those games for the Advance era as well as Johnny from Rush Adventure and the final boss from Rush 1 for the DS era.
But instead, we got Metal Sonic and Big Arms from Sonic 3 (cool music remix, though) for the Classic era, Shadow and the Biolizard from Adventure 2 for the Adventure era, then Silver and the Egg Emperor from Heroes for the Modern era even though Heroes is part of the Dreamcast era as established in the main version.
-------
If you want my thoughts on the special stages in the 3DS version, while it's nice that they brought back the Heroes special stages and fixed a lot of the jank they had in that game, what kills them for me is how brain dead simple and easy they are. By far some of the easiest special stages in the entire series with maybe only Sonic 3D Flickies' Island (PC and Mega Drive versions) being even easier.
I still need to play the DS version of Colors (I don't know when though. I've didn't even finished the Wii version yet), but it really looks interesting too, especially because it follows the Rush gameplay, even if it's without Blaze. Definitely was a shame that SEGA didn't included this version on Colors Ultimate too
The rest, I mostly agree from the most part. I've never played Rush nor Advance 2 and 3, and Advance 1 I've didn't passed the Cassino stage (not that the stage is hard, it's just that I wanted to collect the emerald but keep failing because it's so akward to understand where the rings are), but did played the MS/GG games and agree about SEGA missing the opportunity to add more stages, bosses and rivals from portable games. Not that I needed to play any of those games to think this, but it made me realize that even more
Water Park even proves how it was a missed opportunity. At least I think this stage was better than Seaside Hill. I don't know if Sunset Park's boss could be the best addition to an boss from the classic era, but that is my favourite stage from Triple Touble so maybe as an substitute for Chemical Plant/Casino Night or Sky Sanctuary/Mushroom Hill would be awesome
But even with all that, I don't think is that bad. I mean, it's not even close to be as good as HD Gens, no doubt, but I still had fun while playing even with some other problems. Even the special stages, although I agree they're easy, they're still fun. The 3D Blast one I think is easy too, but for me at least it isn't fun
Also, seeing that it still can give a new experience, it would be nice to have an easier access to it besides emulation, paying a lot for the game or using any "alternative method". And who knows, maybe if the 3DS campaign on the remaster ended up having an good reception for the addition, Colors Ultimate could recieve an campain for the DS Colors too
Unfortunally they'll probably not do either, but the possibility is there
