Once you expand your inventory to the higher slot quantities, I think this becomes less of a thing to worry about.
A feature that I would find far more useful is the ability to lock certain inventory slots so that the items or gear in them won't be sold and so that they won't ever move without me taking the action to do so.
It sounds like you already knew the answer then. All I did was offer a theory based on my experiences in the game. Besides, the things expressed thus far are not mutually exclusive--it can be both: active vs. idle & money vs. exp (or some other intentional design based on cost/benefit).
