How do you use S-Breaks?

I went through the whole first game wondering what they were. Then, just now, I accidentally hit some gamepad button and got access to one character's S-Break on another character's turn. How did I do that? I'm sure I look like a fool, but I'd really appreciate it if someone would tell me what I did to gain this miraculous new power.

On gamepad, pressing left moves the cursor over to the red orbs to select S-Break and trigger it.
On KB/M, left/right can be used to select them, they can be clicked on, or 1/2/3/4 on the keyboard can be used to trigger specific ones instantly.

Left/right on the gamepad, to be more specific. Now enjoy stealing those critical and septium bonuses from under your enemies' noses!
