Fishing rods
I'm in Chapter 4 and I still only have the Progress Rod and the Marine Star. Is that normal or did I miss a rod or 3 somewhere?

I only had the progress rod and that rod for small/medium fish for the longest time. Got a sea rod fairly recently, I think chapter 4. But for reaching C-rank in guild I got a very good rod that can use all bait.

Where was she found? It can't have been the fisherman's guild; I talked to everybody there.

At the house north Grancel, just before the corner road to the west of Grancel.

If you didn't find her it's the lady that bragging she beats her husband with his own fishing hobby.

I heard the world opens up toward the end. I don't suppose you know if it'd be too late to get the rod by then?

You also missed the Piscis Heart rod from somewhere in Chapter 2 that I can't remember. Might have been a chest or something

All rods in the game:

Progress Rod: Lloyd gives it to you automatically
Marine Heart: Ruan casino prize
Piscis Heart: chest in Trett Plain
Bamboo Rod: Talk to Norche in the western house of Grancel northern section at the start of chapter 3. Missable.
Metal Rod Trident: Perfectly finish the Fishing Spot Search request, by reporting all six fishing spots within Rolent. I don't know if you can get it if you report less but since you're reading this now, just report them all. Missable I guess?
Lakelord II: During the limbo between chapter 5 and 6 (ie after defeating Ragnard but before checking in the inn), talk to Cecile in Bose, then Kuwano in Kingfisher Inn, then Cecile again, and she'll give you the rod. Missable I believe.
Aqua Master: Bracer rank C reward. It's *probably* missable but I don't really know the minimum BP of this game so eh.

You also get that Metal Rod Trident if you report just 5 spots. I couldn't find any more, so I reported and got the rod. But I wasn't happy with what he said, so I just reloaded and kept playing until I got that final spot (which I assumed had to be in Mistwald).

I can back up this claim; I got the rod with 5 spots too.
Also, speaking of the bamboo rod, apparently it's needed to make a certain quest much easier: the Diabest's Secret quest. The Pearlglass fish is easily caught with a bamboo rod and river snails (I hear), but if you don't have the bamboo rod, it's possible with earthworms but extremely difficult. FML

Isn't it dumplings, not river snails? Also, I got it with earthworms after 5ish tries (but maybe I was just lucky)

You know, I like these games for the JRPG-style nostalgia, but I really detest when it is not possible to go back and pick up missed items. I also don't like the way quests just go away if you do the wrong thing and move the story forward at the wrong time.

It is still possible just harder (even then you can reload your file so you don't waste any bait). I honestly think its great design because it rewards the players who went out of their ways and explore the world.

That's just the way the games are designed. They spent a huge amount of time creating all this dialogue, that changes constantly, for everyone everywhere. The design of the game was built around encouraging you go to around and see the dialog they spent so much time writing.

I'm not the biggest fan of this design, but I see why they did it, and it's all optional stuff anyway.
