What is this?
I just spotted this on my store page and figured I'd ask about it.

I notice some people mentioning Imported saves/characters which makes me think this is a sequel.

And from the screenshots in the store page it looks like a TRPG/SRPG like Final Fantasy Tactics but it may just be a regular JRPG.

Any info would be appreciated.

It is a sequel. SC stands for second chapter. FC is on sale, which you should play first.

Yes, it's a turn-based Tactical JRPG with a lot of very good dialogue.

Yup, it's a direct sequel of http://store.steampowered.com/app/251150/, which is currently on 50% sale.
This is regular JRPG. The battle system is similar to Lunar series combined with Xenosaga Eps I.
If you are into old-school JRPG with charming characters and emphasis on story/world-building, this series is a must get.
You can try the first game first since it's on 50% sales. Then if you like it, you can consider buying this one later :)
I got 2 different answers right off the bat. Tactics game or not tactics game. Because it's the tactics part that makes or breaks my interest.

It's a turn based JRPG that takes place on a grid when you enter a battlescape.

It is a videogame =P

Trails in the Sky: SC is the sequel to Trails in the Sky FC. Both games part of the "Trails" Subseries of Falcom's legendary "The legend of Heroes" subseries of Falcom's legendary Dragon Slayer series.

It is a Story RPG, where the plot and world building take precedence over the gameplay, it is not a visual novel however. Combat is turn based, it takes place on a grid-like battlefield but is not quite a "Tactics" game. There is some character positioning but the gameplay isn't chess like, like in your average SRPG.

The imported saves thing is because you can transfer some character data from the first game (Trails in the Sky FC) to this. Think of it like Golden Sun if you played that (No need for Link cables, nor overly complicated passwords though!)

Hope this helps!

That sounds like a tactics game. The term JRPG wouldn't apply in a gameplay sense. Only in a story telling perspective.

It depends on how you view it.
If you consider Lunar or Grandia to be tactics game, then yes this is tactics RPG.
If you want something more along the line of FF Tactics, then this is not really for you.
You can see the battle here (this is from the first game):

This looks like an Arc The Lad series game. It's a TRPG but the ability to position and flank enemies is completly superflous

The battle system is "positional", with actions requiring you to move through the field (or abilities having an AoE). In this sense it is simillar to strategy games. But encouters begin by touching enemies on the screen, or because the story demands.

So yeah, it has something similar to a Tactics system, but the game flow is completely different from a Final Fantasy Tactics game. You go to cities, explore the map, go to dungeons etc.

Yeah OP, it's turn-based combat on a grid. However, I doubt it's as complex as what you're looking for. The main draw of this game is the story + world building. If that doesn't appeal to you, then this probably isn't for you.

You should buy it anyways though because I love it. :D

Actually, while positioning is important, but I believe that timing (the AT bar is on the left of the screen) is far more important than the positioning. S-Breaks allow you to interject into the turn order, and there are some skills that have less delay than others, and another character (Schera) gets the ability to push everyone else within a range to take the immediate next turns.

I say that timing is far more important than positioning because positioning doesn't matter at all when you're using arts, as an example. They can be cast from any point on the screen, and some crafts have ridiculous amounts of range.

Also turn bonuses. And being able to mess with them, taking advantage of them or denying those advantages from your enemies.

But yeah. This is a sequel to Trails in the Sky (a.k.a. "Trails in the Sky FC", "Trails FC", "FC", etc.). The two games together form one large and complete storyline.

You should definitely not play this game before you play FC. If you love what you're seeing/hearing, feel free to buy it, though.

TBH the battle system reminded me heavily of chrono trigger just remove the ATB and add in the turn order (with the really cool mechenic of being able to see things like crits happening)
