It should be noted SC is the direct continuation of Trails in the Sky First Chapter.
One of the hallmarks of a truly great RPG is wanting to do something more. Most of my favorite RPGs take a different approach to story - they have a story that's not just a wrapper around the dungeons, but a good story in its own right.
Disgaea. Dark Souls. Odin Sphere. Planescape: Torment. And yes, Xenogears is right up there with these games. It has its own grand tale to tell.
Unfortunately, it repeatedly stumbles on the way. So many things about that game hold it back.
Xenogears has useless characters that don't contribute to the story past their introduction. One of them gets a cutscene where they say they'll continue to hang around "for awhile" and then they may as well drop off the face of the Earth, since they never do anything interesting again. (It turns out said character was going to do more, but their story had to be cut when the dev ran out of time.)
And its pacing is all kinds of screwed up. Because the dev ran out of time, the entire second disc is like the cliff notes version of the game they would have built if they'd had the time. And a bunch of stuff had to be cut to save time. But the problem is that this makes a lot of the stuff that happened in disc 1 seem like pointless filler. So the first half of the game is full of pointless filler, and the second half of the game has to skip over all the really interesting stuff that's going on.
(PS: After playing Xenogears I understood the plot of Evangelion and still see the similairites up to Eva 3.33)
Guess I needed to vent that... again. :(
Still waiting for Threads of Fate to come back around. Unlikely, but I'm gonna wait anyway.
I'd rather wait for FF XV than have another terribly looking mobile port.
I know that graphic isn't everything and newer SE games aren't that good, but even emulator can give You better vizuals than these mobile versions.
Too bad nobody is interested in making HD pixel art editions (or maybe they are, but it tooks much longer than making everything in 3D enviroment - like they did with FFIII and FFIV remakes).
I also felt that xenogears 2nd disc was actually good, but I can see why people would say it's bad. I grant it could have been better if they didn't cliffnote everything, but it was still good storywise IMO.
The battlesystem though. I have no clue why people say it had a good battlesystem. It was one of the most redundant battle system of em all. There is virtually no reason to not spam your newest/best deathblow over and over unless you needed to heal or buff or something. The combo thing was virtually useless beyond saving actionpoints for when a boss is using the 'defend' command. Fei and Citan were stupid op. Other characters like marie or maria or whatever her name is felt like a joke character.
The gear battles were new and interesting though, but It hink most people hated those, makes no sense to me.
The music in Xenogears is great though, and you didn't mention that one. what?! just what. That's probably the only thing xenogears did better IMO, and even then I'm not so sure with the newer trails games like cold steel, I think the music gets better.
And yes. I do believe I did forget to mention the soundtrack. Xenogears has a great soundtrack; I still think Chrono Trigger is Mitsuda's best work, but Xenogears is also pretty spiffy.
