There's also an attack bonus attached to larger chains, and of course it's easy to make it all happen on an ATK 50 or critical turn too. It's not uncommon for a Chain 3 to put out as much or more damage than most S-breaks.
Chapter 3 has a very tanky end boss, so you might be experiencing this firsthand sooner rather than later.
Not to say they're bad, but you do absolutely need a physical comp on those difficulties and stacked buffs (la forte, true distend etc.) for them to even be viable, which isn't optimal apart from maybe ch. 8 where physicals are top dog regardless.
Though they can deal a ton of damage and have very high reward.
Agate, Chain 2 with Agate, Chain 3 with Agate, Heaven's Kiss, spam Agate and his infinite CP some more.
I use them a lot in 3rd with a certain character as he is amazing with chain attacks specifically but yeah.
I usually use chain crafts on good opportunity turns (defenses providing of course). But yeah you don't typically go all the way into a Chain 4 unless the fight is already pretty much over.
Agate does a bit better with chain though since he's a CP battery.
The character I am talking about also has some really interesting uses with certain bosses.
