わんわん wan wan is the onomatopoeia for a dog barking in Japanese.

ko has many meanings, in this case it means 子 ko child or the smaller/younger version of something, like the diminutive "-y" or "-ie" in English[en.wiktionary.org].

わんこ wan ko (not wank-o) means doggy or puppy, usually said by children or in a cute/informal way.

子犬 ko inu (literally child-dog) is the proper word for puppy.
