Generally I wouldn't advise mind hunting thugs with any astral at all, but at 3+ they automatically both prevent the attack and feeblemind the caster.
If they don't have ritual of returning/ring of returning/pearls to cast that, you might be able to kill using a more conventional magic phase attack.
Depends on what type of mage it is exactly.
There are some remote assassin spells like Earth Attack.
Or remote attack spells like Seeking Arrow.
Most likely way to deal with it is to stall with some skelespam and run the timer down or hope its owner didn't fix its only elemental weakness (cold) and spam it down with frozen hearts.
If you're just looking to trade for less cost, you can take your would-be mind hunters, teleport them onto it, and spam magic duel --> returning.
Though I think losing might trigger army losses and make him run away. If he dont have anywhere to run then he will die from that.
