Unit Gold Upkeep
I was surprised to see, that the formular for unit gold upkeep has been changed. Maybe in Dominions 6 1.0, maybe in a patch, I did not notice. Obersavtions:

RC: Recruitment cost in gold
UC: Upkeep cost in gold
Res: Ressource Cost
Rec: Recruitment Points Cost

1) Guard Dog
RC 7, UC 6, Res: 1, Rec: 2
Size 2, Supply 0.
Animal
Items: None.

2) Swordman
RC 10, UC 8, Res: 13, Rec: 9
Size 3, Supply 1
Items: Ring Mail Hauberk, Iron Cap, Shield, Broad Sword

3) Heavy Infantry
RC 16, UC 13, Res: 37, Rec: 23
Size 3, Supply 1
Items: Full Plate Mail, Full Helmet, Kite Shield, Short Sword

4) Castle Guard
RC 16, UC 13, Res: 27, Rec: 23
Size 3, Supply 1
Items: Chain Mail Hauberk, Half Helmet, Kite Shield, Broad Sword, Crossbow

5) Militia
RC 7, UC 6, Res: 7, Rec: 3
Size 3, Supply 1
Items: Leather Cuirass, Iron Cap, Shield, Spear

None of these are sacred, riders, magic path user or commanders. All listed values are taken from ingame under the morale attribute (X gold/year).

Do you know more about the formular here? I don't recognize a pattern here.

The more advanced equipment the more resources are required. Rec points -the more advanced recruits the more is the cost. Guard dogs and militia (mobilized peasants) have the least rec points cost. Year salary of militia is relativly high, because, probably, they never wanted to serve. But very few money were spent during their short training.
Upkeep cost per month/turn is normally gold recruitment cost / 15, /30 if sacred or a slave (and /60 if both, like R'lyeh's Slave Priest).
As you noticed "morale" shows the cost per year (NOT month/turn), that might explain your confusion, so you have to multiply the above values by 12 to get what you see unde rmorale.

See page 24 of the manual:
All units in the game (except for most summoned units) cost upkeep each turn equal to their gold cost divided by 15. Sacred units and slaves cost half as much upkeep (gold cost divided by 30). Press the Income button to see a list of all income and upkeep costs.

Note that for cavalry, it's a bit more complicated, because both the rider(s) and mount(s) have their own upkeep cost, but this isn't usually calculated based on the visible recruitment cost.

IE Logrian Cavalry costs 30 guild to recruit, the rider has upkeep 8/year (less than 30/30 multiplied by 12) while the horse has 16/year.
This is because the rider's real gold cost is 10/gold, while the war horse's is 20. You can see this stuff from the inspector or ctrl+I.
Look at base cost and subtract 10000, for most units it's accurate if they're not sacreds or commanders).

The Manual! I didn't even think of that. Just googled it and checked steam.
RC * 12 / 15 = [Round Up:]
That works now! Thank you very much :)

Now I wonder, if the unit type changes to mage if I empower a non-mage commander

Also I remember there is a cursed torso armor that makes units sacred. That for non-combat mages...
Any reason the upkeep cost in game is "per year" though?

I don't know, maybe because of rounding? I certainly wouldn't object to morale showing monthly rather than yearly costs.
Monthly upkeep costs for a standard 10 gold unit would be like 0.6, which night feel awkward. The yearly numbers make it easier to just work with integers. I don't feel there's a problem with the current system.
