Dominions 6

Dominions 6

This vs Dominions 4?
I currently have Dominions 4, and I've played it a bit - I'm by no means good at it or anything, and I was wondering... is 6 worth it? From what the store pages of 5 and 6 say, it seems like there's not too much different between this and 4, but I don't know if more has been added/changed beyond what is listed.

So my question is this; is Dominions 6 worth it for someone who has a little bit of experience with Dominions 4? New nations and balance tweaks mean nothing for me because I don't have enough experience with 4 for that to really be something that's relevant to me.

Between 4 and 6:

More content (as you say, you don't really care about this though)
New magic path
Battles are now realtime rather than turnbased (though you still cannot issue orders mid battle)
Underground cave layer on the world map
Many interface improvements (mostly in terms of shortcuts to do things)
Improved AI
Improved mod support, including steam workshop support
Built in lobby system for playing multiplayer games

Those are the main things I think. It would be fair to say that on a surface level, especially if the change to the battles being in real time is not relevant to you, they are very similar games. Dominions 6 is better, but Dominions 4 is also a fine game.

There are huge mechanical changes as well as quality of life changes in addition to quite a lot of more normal additional content.

The list of things that haven't been changed between 4 and 6 is probably smaller than the list of things that have changed.

So for me it would definitely be worth it, especially if you can get it on a discount.

Here are a few other posts about the same topic for more details:

Why didn't you play Dom4 more? I think that's key to if you'll like Dom6 at all.

The gameplay haven't changed that much but there is more content. I have tried playing some Dom4 again a while back and you really feel the lack of some of the quality of life features.

Like ugh the old fiddly research system were you basically put 100% research into Enchantment but when you were close to hitting your goal you needed to fiddle with it to allocate the amount to just level Enchantment to you goal and the rest into Blood or whatever (as any overflow research would be wasted until you went back to researching Enchantment again)

The new research queue is so much more convenient.

Yeah I think if you've played 6 and learn it well, and then try to play 4 afterwards, a hundred things will drive you crazy using the older, less polished UI.

Personally I liked Dominions 3/4 a decent amount, but the the switch to real time combat engine and other upgrades in 5 changed it into my favorite game... Until 6 came out :).

I think you lose some victory conditions and castle upgrade features when you move from Dominions 4 to 6.
