First, I would question how an independent province is "owned" by a player who hasn't even conquered it yet (unless it's bordering their capital).
Unless the game creator has some sort of rule that players are not allowed to talk to each other, you're always allowed to bargain. Whether or not the other player is open to bargaining is another question. ;)
It was taken over by an independents attack event. And yes but I did not know if bargaining in this type of situation was frowned upon...
So you get to make a choice, is the prov worth squabbling over? In your shoes if I was being nice would ask for some gold/gems to exchange for clearing it, or holding onto the prov for a bit to get some gold out out if then they take it back. If they can't really contest you on it, then keep it. But realize you probably made an enemy, and that's okay. This is a war game for total omnipotent domination, world is harsh.
Now the other player is also totally entitled to think you're being a ♥♥♥♥ and go to war with you. But you're just as entitled to keep it.
I recommend joining the various dom discords. These sorts of questions will get you a ton of different viewpoint answers.
Interesting thanks. Very difficult choices to be made. Yes I have joined some discords I've just never seen a clear answer on this topic and I guess that is sort of the point haha. I've often thought if you choose misfortune and bad luck and lose provinces to lots of independents should you face no consequences of other players taking them? Everyone always has to give them back to you?
As a general guideline if it's adjacent to an enemy capital, or straddling an important transit route, or has really good magic sites then expect a fight. If it's an inconsequential province far from their capital and they don't have any armies of note in the neighborhood you might be able to make them back down.
Yeah we have a NAP and I don't really fear them yet so that is not an issue. It is just a random province on our border. So I guess I will ask for a bargain of some kind whether I keep it or he keeps it. I can pay him or he can pay me. I did clear it of very strong invaders. I don't think it should be a freebie.
The human nature takes over and war follows - no matter the choice someone is making.
Human nature. Human nature never changes. (Yep, the original is just only with a three word noun, but this seems to be more fitting.)
Of course, if I were the other player, I'd do my best to communicate my intentions - thst is, I'd say something along the lines of "Rebel Scum have temporarily usurped control of my province. We'll be taking it back to our loving bosom in two turns.
Anyone who tries to take advantage of the situation shall face delicious...I mean, deadly consequences."
