Dom6 vs Dom4
Hi all,

I have Dom4 from way back when but I never really got around to playing it much and it slipped off my radar.

I've been seeing a lot of talk of Dom6 recently and it made me want to retry the series.

My question is: is it worth buying Dom6 or are they similar enough for me to stick with Dom4 for single player? Basically, are the changes between them groundbreaking enough for Dom6 to be a much better experience for a relatively new player.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Dom4 is a good game (I still play it as I play every other iteration), and the reason for playing every iteration: All of them are different enough to warrant this.
Overall Dom6 is a more refined version of Dom4 (due to massive changes from 4 to 5), therefore I can highly recommend playing 6 (or at least 5). There are numerous changes under the hood and numerous changes that are almost groundbreaking (the change from turnbased battles to basically realtime battles).

To make it short: They all are good games and the differences are huge.

Dom6 has massively changed as far as it can iteratively. Essentially every system has been overhauled at least once since Dom4. Now the graphics are largely the same obviously but mechanically a lot has changed and polished.

If it's worth it is entirely a personal question. If you're unsure, play a bit with Dom4 to see if you actually like the series. If you do, upgrade.

Dom 6 is significantly improved. The new blessing system opens up tons of fresh strategies.

I think if you have any intention of using mods then Dominions 6 is pretty much mandatory because all the modders have moved over to it basically and there will be a huge amount of good quality mod content for Dom6 which is more easily available than with Dom4.

In terms of which is a better singleplayer experience I think Dom6 is considerably better, but it costs money! You already own Dominions 4 which is also a fine game.

There was a really beautiful flat earth map for Dominions 4 that I'd love to see in 6. Although the underground took up a large portion of the map and now that we have an underground layer it could change it a lot.

Thanks for the info guys. I think it's a good idea to see if I get back into Dom4 first and then move over to 6 if I'm finding in playing it alot.

Tbh, I knew 6 would be a must for multiplayer anyway so makes sense to buy if get into it.

That'd be my suggestion too - if you bounce off 4 you'd probably regret buying 6.

If you like 4 and start playing it a bunch, go ahead and buy 6.

I'd say that the addition of simultaneous combat, multiple map planes/layers and an entirely new school of magic are groundbreaking enough to warrant the upgrade. ;)

As others have said, yes. While I could see myself going back and playing Dom 5, I never went back to Dom 4 after starting Dom 5. Dom 6 is just the continuation of that journey.

I agree with the advice to try 4 and see how you feel. If I'm remembering right, Dominions 4 has a good tutorial. I don't think Dom 5 or 6 do. It might be worth playing through that.
