Mostly quality of life, rebalancing of systems and some new kingdoms.
If you are new to the serie, I would strongly advise to try the previous one to see if you like it. You would not notice most of the differences.

Yeah hard to notice something when you haven't played another game to compare. I don't think there is a discount for dom5 right now so whats the point of taking previous tittle anyway? Everything got better and the difference is there. Don't listen to him.

The 2 biggest changes for me is auto magic site searching and being able to make peace and non-aggression pacts with the ai.

The music is brilliant too.

Like previous iterations of the Dominions game, the difference between the two games are numerous but since they do not change the game so much as say Civ V did to Civ IV's gameplay, some will claim that there's no 'real' difference and you're better playing the earlier version instead. If that's your viewpoint then, yes, you should play Dom5 first and the buy Dom 6 if you want to try a new game. There's no harm there for anyone so it's reasonable advice but not 'good'; IMO and I'll explain why.

There are many subtle changes between the two games, so many that it would take ages to detail them all. However, nothing as drastic as 1UPT brough to the Civ franchise. But we have an all-new magic path, Glamour, as well as other new features. None of these have such a dramatic impact on the gameplay though.

There will obviously be some folks who are completing their previous Dom 5 games but there will be a few 'never-Dom 6' players as well. I have no idea how many players fall into these two categories but I'd imagine most will move to the new game eventually because it's got more to offer. If you want to play MP, Dom 6 is the future but Dom 5 will do for now.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

The map has fog of war now too making scouting early game more important.

Look, I got 500 hours in Dom5 and 25 hours in Dom6. The game is a huge upgrade in all areas. Not sure if they even list them all. A thread detailing new staff back from beta was a massive read. I don't understand those salty people. One guy posted that he still plays only Dom3 he got 13 years ago and that new ones suck. Imagine that. It's basically the same price so no point at all to struggle with older UI and lack of multiplayer lobbies, worse AI, smaller scale battles etc. You don't save on anything if you are new to it.

Yes, it looks the same (quite better actually, some new sprites look very nice), plays the same on surface but if you dig in and you know previous game pretty well you will experience very big amount of changes. And we can see that the game will keep up with new nations and improvements until another 5-6 years pass and we will get to enjoy Dominions 7.

This list should be front and center in the game's store page. I was just thinking the changes were looking a bit underwhelming but clearly way more was added.

And apparently there was even more. They even made the list themselves, it's just isn't available in Steam. Would have been helpful.

EDIT: LucidTactics has also made a bunch of videos breaking down the changes and showcasing UI changes too, which make a pretty big difference: https://www.youtube.com/@LucidTactics/videos

Yeah I was in the same boat. NONE of that stuff was listed in the storefront or atleast not from what I've seen. I was genuine under the impression by some earlier comments that it was just some QoL changes for 40 bucks. Now I feel bad.

Also I looked back and noticed Dom5 came out in fkin 2017. 7 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ years. Feels like it came out during covid

Now I feel bad for being sus-
