Wargame: Red Dragon

Do you use NATO symbols, or stock unit symbols?
Simple question, curious to see if people are bothered to use the NATO unit system.

This might be true if you have served within a NATO military or have extensively learnt those symbols.

For someone who is not aware of NATO symbols, it is very difficult and can't just be " easy to read and understand " .

Your comment is far from reality and rather an individual opinion referring to yourself.

Let me phrase that differently, then. Either version will take a bit of learning and will take getting used to. With that in mind, and assuming the player has to learn either version of the symbols, the NATO symbols are simpler (being made of several simple geometric shapes rather then complex iconograpghy) and thus in my opinion easier to learn and easier to read then the game's pictographs. It provides a lot of information in a simple pattern. Knowing the designation for a "helicopter" is the two triangles facing one another, for example, allows you to pick out all the helicopter units on the screen. The designation for "AA helicopter," "logistics helicopter," "AtoG helicopter" and "command helicopter" is just the symbol for a helicopter with an additional line or triangle (the position of which then gives you the remaining information) rather then a whole new and unrelated pictograph. Furthermore, the same line meaning "logistics unit" and line meaning "command unit" is the same regardless of if it is overlayed over the symbol for a helicopter, tank, or ground vehicle. So again, I personally think the symbology is quite simple to learn and far easier to read then the detailed pictures and pictographs used by the game.
we have symbols in this game ?

You might find it easier, but it really isn't. NATO symbols overall are difficult for someone without any connection or experience to real life military work. Ingame symbols literally provide " pictures " and are so on easy to understand even by a toddler.

I do know NATO symbols, but I also know that you can forget to explain them to a civilian. Most people take months until they are fully aware of all nato symbols.

I learnt the NATO symbols in playing a few games with them turned on. I have to agree with Zrut that they are much easier to identify than the Eugene picture symbolsl.

I have to disagree.

John is right. It's much harder to learn than the ingame symbols.

At least if you haven't got any previous knowledge.

It took me two hours, tops, of gameplay to learn the basic NATO symbols.

I've been playing for over 500 hours now.

It's far worth the effort.
