Steel Division: Normandy 44
I am looking forward to it too, just a little disappointed that they have already restricted the game to the French theatre. ( Normandy ).
I am not really worried about the cities etc, more about the choice of nations and units. It will literally be Allies vs Germany. That's about it. No Japan, No USSR, No Poland, no nothing...
I think they should just have released a Steel Division: World War Two. As simple as that. This would have offered plenty of chances to expand. But a Normandy will always stay normandy. Well, I'll still buy it and give it a try. Even for the fact, that this game MUST include proper paratroopers falling from the skies. A WW2 game about normandy without paras is like steak without fries.
Machines rule the wars since WW1. I wouldn't say paratroopers were the most important part during WW2, but definitely did change tactics and strategy a lot.
The Panzergrenadiere however have always had a very short life expectancy. Yes, they were crucial to all types of motorized units and armored units, but there is nothing special about them really. They are not more than motorized infantry, while the Fallschirmjaeger were considered a special force. This isn't the case anymore nowadays.
I don't know too much about the U.S Airborne troops, just that they weren't used as much for special operations, as their German counterpart did.
You should really read about the Brandenburgers and the Devil's Brigade.
The Waffen SS was not any better than any Wehrmacht unit. I know it's a big hype going on about it, but it really wasn't. Not in terms of tactics and equipment.
The Brandenburgers were not only active in Poland, they have also been operating in Greece,Italy, Africa, Russia, Ukraine etc.
I have to disagree here, the Panzergrenadiers who have been serving with the SS, were not considered a special force, nor did they have a better training. The only special forces of the SS was the SS-Jäger-Bataillon 502, and this is Light Infantry.
However, as a German and a former German soldier, I have a very negative attitude towards the SS overall, for one they were not even considered part of the German Streitkraefte, there were a political organisation. Yes, they were an own branch, officially etc, but there wasn't any German Wehrmacht,Luftwaffe or Marine serviceman who would ever consider the SS a part of the military. In fact, majority of warcrimes came from the Waffen SS. The Division Totenkopf was an armored division, and just one of many.
If you really are interested in German special forces, forget about the SS. Read about the Brandenburgers, Fallschirmjaeger, Kampfgeschwader 200 etc, the SS really only offers a small amount of units, that have been transfered to actual special forces, such as the Brandenburgers. But the SS has never trained special forces themselves nor led any operations involving special forces other than the 502s any. The major difference between the SS and the Wehrmacht or any other brance was, that 1. They recruited volunteers only. 2. You had to be a special type of " aryan ". 3. You had to be 100% healthy, no lost teeth etc, no holes. 4. You had to be extremely physical fit, comparable to modern SAS,Seal, KSK units etc. But their training, was definitely not more special nor made them more effective than let's say the Gebirgsjaeger, a light infantry unit of the Wehrmacht. The SS might has been more physical fit overall though. Enough about the SS though!!
Yes, I can give you a link about the Devil's Brigade.

Actually, there are plenty to find via google. Just google for Devil's Brigade. But please stop about this whole SS is better or special BS, no offense. I am just fed up seeing young people ( mostly non-Germans ) walking around, claiming they know about German history and military, just of reading some modern sources and watching documentaries about it. Talk to German veterans, more than one please, and let's say what you think about it then. Politics and war crimes aside, the Fallschirmjaeger were the real deal back then.
If you should be interested in more information about the Devil's Brigade, or want to ask questions, feel free to add me. This discussion went off-topic a while ago.
