The Modding of Isaac: Re-mod

Introduction:
Already got Platinum God? Tired of the same old characters and starting items? Want to improve the ultra-secret character so you actually want to replay him? Well, you've come to the right thread.


I have not created anything original in this thread: a lot of this thread will be links to mod releases on reddit. The purpose of this thread is to inform the Steam Rebirth community about the different available completed mods, and the forum to which they are posted so fans can go directly there to get the newest updates and provide direct feedback to improve future versions of mods.

Similarly, if you do not take the time to read the details of this post before modding, you're unfortunately out of luck for acheivements. Mod at your own risk.


Act 1: Protect Yourself Before You Reck Yourself...'s Acheivements

So, to clarify about the warning: there are SOME mods that will still allow you to get Steam acheivements. This post clearly states which file types can't be altered or acheivements will be disabled:this one, right here.


For those lazy people who avoid clicking the link, essentially if a mod changes a tinted/X rock texture, item pools (e.g. shop items now in devil rooms), achievement progress, challenges, and/or bosses it will disable acheivements. Always check before playing on a non-111% save file if acheivements are disabled by seeing if the game displays "[MOD]" in red in the bottom right of the screen before hitting start. If it doesn't you should be ok. For example, mods that change music should have no effect on acheivements.



Act 2: First Blood: How to Install
The great thing about installing mods for Rebirth is that it's the same on all platforms. Rejoice, fellow Linux users, for this is nothing like dealing with System Shock 2.
1. Download the mod.
2. Extract file using 7-zip/WinRAR/whatever.
3. Move the extracted file/folder to [...]TheBindingofIsaac\resources.
4. Boot up game and see if it worked.

That's it! If the mod doesn't work, make sure it's in the right location.

NOTE: Using >1 mod at once can cause some issues if they alter the same files. If they alter different files, you should be ok, but you may have to combine them in the same folder if you're having issues. If that doesn't work, I'm sorry, but you'll have to pick just one...for now, at least.


Act 3: Let Someone Else Teach You How to Mod
Despite my use of mods I am not too familiar with making them, so if you're having an issue I recmmend asking the reddit community here.

Do you know if anyone can replace the 7 stat /'s on the pause menu with the actual numbers? Just a suggestion of a mod you could try that I know lot's of people, including me, want. Also, thanks for the tutorial, I'm only using the music though.

As far as I know, stats cannot be shown as numerical values with mods at this time. You can, however, if you're interested, look up on platinum god[platinumgod.co.uk] to see what items change stats by how much. Fun fact: every character starts with 0 luck, despite there being a single bar at the start of each new game. This is why it takes 2 luck upgrades to get 2 bars of luck (at least, I think). Lazarus is the exception, as he starts with -1 luck.

You'll want to search your computer for the game's file location: I would just search "isaac", as it's pretty unlikely for any other file to have that in its name. (If you're on Liunx be sure to select "show hidden files" under "View".) From there, you'll be able to find the resources folder by clicking on a Binding of Isaac Rebirth folder. There may be multiple variations on the filename, but don't worry- there aren't too many! (<5)

Ah, alas, mods! And the endless-run mod I've been dreaming about for quite some time now! You sir (and, of course, the modding community) just made my day ten times better.
I do have a question however : installing mods prevents the achievements from unlocking, but if you already have the True Platinum God, does it do anything at all? I struggled and raged more than I'd like to admit to achieve it, so it'd really sadden me if it erased it or something (me, paranoid? naaaaaah)

If you already have True Platinum God (the 111% one done with you-know-who) then you will not lose your progress or acheivements from modding. You're now free to use mods, including one with a pic of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in place of tinted rocks.

However; with the Afterbirth update/DLC coming this summer, if you buy it I encourage you to remove any mod(s) before buying & installing just to be safe.

If you cannot for any reason easily remove a mod, simply delete everything Isaac related EXCEPT YOUR SAVE (if you do not have it backed up in the Steam cloud) and then delete local content for the game from Steam, and then re-download & install.

Hacked versions are not supporteed on this forum.
(You can't have it non-Steam, the game doesn't exist anywhere else.)

You see the time this was posted? It's almost a entire year before Afterbirth
Back then mods would stop you from unlocking achievements, So you should've only used them once you got Real Platinum God
