Dolby Surround Sound Bugs
There is a nifty bug in the sound system if surround sound is enabled (on the computer): When there is only the music playing, the game is outputting only stereo. If any sound effect is playing, the game is switching to surround. It instantly switches back as soon as only music is playing.
The issue with this is that the music switches sides and changes in volume each time, which is highly annoying.

Another bug resulting from the first one is that if you switch your system to stereo the game still thinks that it's supposed to output dolby for the soundeffects (i guess it's just scanning for the existance of such a device? i have this behaviour with my Logitech G930). If your computer is in stereo mode, this means that all soundeffects only play on the right speaker. But atleast that way the music isn't flopping around...

Did you try the fix from the Known Issues thread where it says "Sound effects not working"? Maybe it helps for this issue too.
What could also work is using a different version of the OpenAL libraries.

First of all, thanks for answering. While that fixes it for now, but it just does so by completely disabling Surround Sound. Which is something i wouldn't call a fix. Still, i guess i can play with that for now. But it should be really easy to just play the music on Surround Sound too if it's detected to completely fix the bug.

if you're using G930's you could just switch off the surround sound on the button under the power button on your headphones and that fixes the issue with FX sounds only playing through the right headphone

That is exactly part of the problem. That solution (alone) doesn't work. You will have sound only on one sound.

It is only "fixed" if you that OpenAL thingy Simon posted.

what do you mean by sound on one sound? at first i wrote you a post asking you if you found another solution and if i did the "fix" that disables the surround sound, if all i had to do was rename the file back to its original filename to activate surround sound again. and if this "fix" disables surround sound altogether on my pc.

i still wonder how it works but right after posting that i started up rebirth and tried switching off the surround through the switch under the power button and it worked. i now have FX sounds in both headphones and music in both.
i think the sound got a tiny bit lower but barely noticeable (might even be my imagination) but as long as i got music and fx sounds from both headphones and the sound's still the same quality, i'm happy.

Sorry misstyped. I meant that that i hear sound only on one ear if i switch to stereo on the headphones.

yea i apologize, i thought it worked but it seems like the surround had stopped working altogether and had to reboot my pc to get the drivers to work again, so now the problem is back, guess i have to use the openal fix
