Breath of Life not working at all?

Just got Breath of Life last run with ??? - Is item broken or sth? I was still getting normally damaged while using it. Still when it depleted it damaged me as it should.

Is it broken or is it just "???" that messes that up?

The Breath of Life prevents damage from tears, but it doesn't block damage from lasers, explosions, or contact damage. If you took damage from one of the methods listed above (excluding tears), then that's normal. However, if you took damage from tears even when using it, it might be a bug. You should try using Breath of Life with a different character and see if it's any different (if Breath of Life doesn't seem to be working with ???, that is).

Oh, didn't know that it doesn't stop dmg from contact/explosions. Didn't test that properly then :P, although i'm pretty sure i got dmg'd by tears while using it. Will have to see next time.

How does it work, btw? It's an active item but I got it once and it seemed to do nothing at all...

You hold the space bar (or controller equivalent) and it will potect you from enemy tears but it'll damage you if you let the charge bar get empty.

nope just had it and its bugged tested from tears while holding still taking dmg and ruined my run...

ps: apparently this is how its work..

If you hold space long enough, it will deal you damage, effectively making you invincible after that. It is not a bug.

you dont understand the item. you are always invincible for a short time after taking a hit.

It only works when the bar is completely depleted.

it's a 'get blood donation machine money for free' item (or walk over a spike tile or two) - hold down space bar and when the meter hits zero, do your invincibility thing *while continuing to hold down the space bar, but let it go before.. about a second? goes by, so you don't take damage from the item. it'll take a bit of practice to get the timing right.
