Its really not that hard, all you need to do is play the game and to not do any deals with the devil. Boss rooms have more items in their pool that increase health

Yeah this isn't too hard - boss drops are frequently +1 heart container, and treasure rooms can have them as well. The soul converter also let's you mass convert soul/black hearts to full heart containers on a 2:1 ratio, which as mentioned above, can be abused with guppy's paw (which is health->soul on a 1:3 ratio) to easily get up to 10 heart containers+2 or more soul hearts (12 total is the cap).
