Stupid in your opinion. Not stupid in the opinion of the myriads of roguelike fans. And I'm talking the actual, hardcore roguelikes - not the rogue"lites" that are popular these days.
Actual roguelikes are supposed to be brutally difficult. That's why they are a niche genre. They're not meant to be fair to the player at all. It's kinda the point.
Those are all good games, but they mostly fall under the category of roguelite, not roguelike. If you want to try some actual roguelikes you'll want to try games like Nethack, ADOM, Angband, Brogue, Moria, etc. for PC. There's also Dragon Crystal for Game Gear/Master System, Fatal Labyrinth for Genesis and Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer for SNES/DS, and also Sword of Fargoal for iOS. But based on your opinion about the amnesia pill issue, you'll probably hate all of those games because they'll be too complicated and/or too difficult.
Not sure how you're not understanding this. It's meant to suck and act as a deterrent to randomly popping pills. That is the purpose of it's affect. If you, even once, pick up a random pill and think, "hmm, I might not want to take this because it might give me amnesia" then it's doing exactly what it was meant to do. It's good design. Also, I wouldn't even be against pills out right killing you as a negative effect, so removing your items and giving you one heart is also fine. As long as there's a chance to get an equally good positive effect from the pills, it's fine.
Also, you obviously do not know what you're talking about when it comes to roguelikes. They've never been about being "fair". They've always been very punishing and difficult. All of those games you listed are great games, but they aren't true roguelikes.
I mean what kind of portrayal of mental illneses is this. And explosive diarrhea is not really explosive! Seriously so ignorant.
Wild thing, I think I love you
