I would imagine it supposed to change the opacity of the map to make it less intrusive, doesn't seem to work for me and apparently others.

Seem opacity does work but only on large map not mini map.

Opacity for the small map and the HUD is necessary. I can't see ♥♥♥♥ on the top left when I have a space bar item.

I found out what it does. if you hit tab it gives you an extended map. the map opacity effects that. :D
